Bridge Road Brewers together with gypsy brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller created a one off brew one Friday evening of March 2012. The result is The Dark Harvest. Inspired by the timing of the collaboration, it was decided to make a dark beer, using locally grown fresh hops. Of several research hops being grown at Rostrevor Hop Garden, one variety stood out for selection and was harvested just hours before being added to this beer.

Black, some light through, thin white head
Aroma - soft roasted malts, soft piney hops, soft citrus hops
Taste - Dark roasted malts, piney hops, soft citrus hop. nice mellow roast, perhaps a little dull for a BIPA
Palate - soft carb, thin to medium body. Finish slightly dry, as main flavour.

Pours dark brown with a large, light tan head. Nose shows fruity hops, with pinapple and passion fruit the most prominent. Underneath is roasted malt and nutty notes. Very tempting. Roasted malt takes precedence over the hops in the flavours, with nutty, biscuit-like malt and earthy coffee notes at the forefront. Not too much in the way of hops other than in the piny, grapefruit-like assertive bitterness. Could use a richer body.

Bottle, bottled 2012-03-30. Dark brown with a small light brown head. Aroma is butterscotch, toffee, caramel, roasted malt. Taste is smooth with caramel, toffee, roasted malt. Smooth finish. Soft carbonation, creamy texture. Soft, creamy and not very hoppy for a black ipa, but as my bottle is a couple of months short of being one year old, perhaps some of the hop notes has worn off? Could use a stronger hop profile to balance the caramel, toffee, butterscotch notes.

330ml bottle. Pours black in colour with a thick tan head leaving some lacing and aroma of roasted malt, coffee plus grapefruit hop. Taste is initially sweetish dark malt, roasted, smokey, coffee, followed by chocolate, raisins and fruity citrus grapefruit & pine hop bitterness. Nicely smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, clean finish with some lingering chocolate notes. Well balanced, very drinkable black IPA.

330mL bottled 10/14/14 Deep ruby-highlighted brown body, holds a tan head. Muted aroma somewhat; rich maltiness, lots of toasted nuttiness and cocoa, with resiny hops, hints of tropical fruits & leafiness. Full body, oily texture, seems stronger than abv suggests. Quite intense - burnt malts, cocoa, burnt sugar & toast, with hop notes of ripe rockmelon, peach, paw paw, leaves & mown grass. Strong bitterness, drying finish. Full on beer, there’s some interesting hop character in there, but somewhat overshadowed by everything else going on.

poured dark cola and settled black, hints of ruby show through. Light brown layer of film. Excellent staying power to this. Good lacing. Smells of chocolate covered orange with dirty, gritty pineapple and orange hybrid. Good nose. taste is a bit odd but good. a little rubbing alcohol but it is restrained. Really do not notice the body as the hop profile dominates. Orange, pine and grapefruit. all muddled together and very dirty. palate is a little meh but good. A little bit of metallic pine and grapefruit but oily in the front and mid and low carbonation. I like this. Very different and to me the hop character is what stands out. Not the body of this.
