dwyerpg (2094), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Aug 21, 2008 Beautiful appearance. Nice hop aroma to this. This is quite nice. Sweet, but with a good hop bite. Quite woody, but overall a solid barleywine. Oakes (6979), Miami Beach, Florida, USA May 8, 2008 Hazy medium amber colour. Big nose with a hint of bourbon, lots of fat toffee and caramel malts. Not getting much barrel on the palate, but given how good knucklhead can be with its rich malts, I’m not going to sweat it. rkuhnel (1144), Eureka, California, USA Jun 28, 2008 From a 22 oz bottle with No. 012 on the front, this poured a very deep garnet color with a rich foamy off-white head with big bubbles that left virtually no lacing. Nose of caramel malts, grassy hops, and a hint of bourbon. Rich and almost oily mouthfeel. Flavor is dominated by by the rich malts, and the bourbon becomes more apparent but is still subtle. Great bitter hop finish. I drank this at cellar temperature - 55 degrees) and unlike most other raters I personally liked this one a lot. brewandbbq (226), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Mar 9, 2008 After having six vintages in a row all the way back to 1992, I’m really looking forward to this one.
Pours perfectly clear, dark amber with crimson hues. A dense, beige head of an inch or so leaves some fair lacework of ropes and dots.
Aromatics are malty, fruity, and boozy.
Malt-forward as with all the Knuckleheads, in a very juicy way. Ripe fruit aplenty, followed by some pine notes and plenty of vanilla. Bourbon is there from start to finish.
The mouthfeel is medium, creamy, and sticky.
Slightly crisp while being quite tacky.
The pallet is malt-laden and fruity. Bourbon-soaked oranges intermingles with caramel and doughy two-row.
The bourbon is substantial, but not overbearing. Plenty of vanilla and a hint of oaky dryness, especially on the exhale.
Faint spruce bark and stone fruit lend an earthy quality.
Finishes with a lightly building heat on the throat, with a firm bitterness that reaches for dryness but is overuled by residuals.
Wowza. I would be tempted to drink this bottle in two parts, but it’s just too damn tasty.
SuzyGreenberg (1043), Seattle, Washington, USA Apr 10, 2008 22 oz. bottle & draft - dark amber with slight haze and quickly fading white head; great nose mix of sweet sugar and malts; chewy texture and has a fruity/hoppy kick to it; more relaxed on draft as the bottle’s freshness is in your face a little; not your standard BW, but i find this delicious; harsh ratings be damned, this is a great beer
