Quake1028 (624), Tampa, Florida, USA Mar 20, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Gillard. Dark amber with a light brown head, very small and disappears almost instantly. Tropical fruits, dark esters, caramel, toffee and some roasty/toasty notes. No sense of the ABV in the aroma, for me. Flavor profile is similar, tons of tropical and dark esters, caramel, roasted malts and some perfume notes. I like the mouthfeel, but I feel that it’s thin at points and maybe that’s a result of the barrel aging, I don’t know. Otherwise, where is the oak or barrel aging hints, anywhere, in this beer? ABV becomes very noticeable midway and throughout the finish, astringency picking up along the way.
MrBeerFanatic (168), jamestown, New York, USA Jul 5, 2008 Pours a darkish brown lightly cloudy with a off white head. Has the aroma of sweet hops a little alcohol and a hint of caramel. The flavor here is much like an IPA with flavors of hops but also a hint of caramel and the alcohol/bourbon does make it self known and almost to the point of overwhelming but not quite. Very bitter finish and semi sweet with a syrupy mouth feel that is rich. Somewhat complex and pretty balanced. rkuhnel (949), Eureka, California, USA Jun 28, 2008 From a 22 oz bottle with No. 012 on the front, this poured a very deep garnet color with a rich foamy off-white head with big bubbles that left virtually no lacing. Nose of caramel malts, grassy hops, and a hint of bourbon. Rich and almost oily mouthfeel. Flavor is dominated by by the rich malts, and the bourbon becomes more apparent but is still subtle. Great bitter hop finish. I drank this at cellar temperature - 55 degrees) and unlike most other raters I personally liked this one a lot. Ty5592 (1000), Hatfield, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 28, 2008 Bottle. Pours a medium clear caramel color with no head. Malty anroma with caramel and light wood notes. The taste was the same and NO bvourbon and sweet woody notes in the finish. Not bad, but it feels like false advertising. AmEricanbrew (799), Left Coast, Louisiana, USA Jun 24, 2008 Nice clear garnet color with a thin head. First smell is grassy hops with a whiff of wood. Medium body and smooth. Taste is more winter warmer to than barleywine, with spicy malts and yeast, barely a hint of the barrel aging in the flavor. AgentSteve (596), Livermore, California, USA Jun 13, 2008 Pours ruddy brown with no head. The nose is subtle fruits and caramel. A hint of bourbon. The flavor is the same, with the bourbon being way too subtle. Decent, but not as good as hoped.
