Braudog (3463), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Apr 29, 2008 Bottle. If you hold this up to the light, it’s cherry red. I find the aroma sweet, but rich, almost candy-like. This drinks with a tart tanginess, like a sour apple almost, with a solid alcohol kick to the gullet in the finish. I don’t detect any hint that this was aged in bourbon barrels. (#3440, 4/29/2008)
dwyerpg (2042), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Aug 21, 2008 Beautiful appearance. Nice hop aroma to this. This is quite nice. Sweet, but with a good hop bite. Quite woody, but overall a solid barleywine. BlackDonald (1040), North Carolina, USA Jul 31, 2008 Pours a murky dark brown with amber highlights. Big alcoholic nose with some spicy hops, citrus, cookie dough and caramel. Lots of sweet candied fruits on the palate, dates and brown sugar as well. Bourbon notes are very light but become more apparent as it warms. Decent and easy drinking, but does not really come across as a barleywine, more of a hopped up hybrid IIPA Pigfoot (2225), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 21, 2008 poured into a Duvel glass...loads of bourbon notes spill out...I want to bring it closer...
Dark, opaque, deep, ruddy crimson brown, lush creamy head,
Aroma seeps out leather, molasses, dark fruit, raisins, carob, spice...bright berries and cherries....burnished, rich, ridiculously full...malt and hops at play.
Taste: huge whiskey flavor, big, beefy, lush and tasty. ..bodacious...thick and slick on the palate...sweet and luscious....
"a special brew...to be savored"... I am savoring!
hot, sparkling, full of flavor, indulgent...a great swath of fat bourbon goodness all over the place. damn, it’s something else. An excellent indulgence, beautiful nightcap....I almost wished I’d saved it to share with friends, but...hell, I was thirsty!
Sparky27 (516), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bomber courtesy of hopdog. Pours a murky swamp water brown with one finger tan head and crazy lacing. Nose is bourbon, dark fruits, caramel and brown sugar. Taste is bourbon, wood, raisins, caramelized sugar and a hoppy bitter finish which cuts the sweetness nicely. Medium mouth feel. Decent BW. Thanks Steve! kramer (1866), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 15, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours a clear amber to dark copper body with a small fizzy beige head. The nose is fairly unimpressive, just a bit of toffee malt and a slight bourbon booziness. Lots of alcohol vapors when you get right in there with your nose. Unlike a lot of bourbon beers, the bourbon in this is completely up front and the main focus of this beer. Heavy bourbon and caramel sweetness up front makes it taste more like candy than beer, and the bourbon just takes over after the initial taste and doesn’t let go. I don’t even like the bourbon flavor that this beer has, it tastes very much like it’s Jim Beam because of that weird spicy sweetness that it has. Medium bodied with a slight malty stickiness and a lingering bourbon heat, moderate soft carbonation. The longer the finish lingered on the worse that it got, so I kept taking gulp after gulp so that the finish didn’t have a chance to linger about. Not the best effort from these guys, but I’ll keep trying anything that they make anyway.
