12 oz bottle into English pint. Pours almost black with a thin beige head. Aroma is nice and strong coffee, bread and a vague unpleasant off-note (cooked vegetables?) that’s not offensive enough to bring the aroma score down too much. Taste is sweet and a bit sour. Carbonation is medium-high, body is medium, mouthfeel is creamy. I like it, but it’s not on the same caliber as the Mt. Shasta Shastafarian Porter I had right before this.

Bottle @ home. Dark brown/black appearance with a dark brown head. Quite roasty dark coffee, a touch of chocolate sweetness, and dark malts in the nose. Very roasty, dark coffee, chocolate, dark malty flavor with a fair amount of bitterness.
2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20 heemer77 (5010) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - JUN 5, 2011
Bottle. Perfectly black body with traces of an orange tinted beige head. The nose is fairly strong coffee with some hints of ash. There is also some sweet almonds. The taste has lots of coffee up front and through the finish. The finish is slightly tart like plums, and certainly off putting. I am not sure if it is too much poor coffee or a slight infection. I have gotten this weird tart character in multiple coffee dominated beers, so I assume it’s poor balancing. There is also wood and ash, especially in the aftertaste. The body seems chalky, but that may be because I can’t think anything but ash covered fruit while drinking. Bleh, this comes across like a bad cherry stout that someone used to extinguish a cigarette.

On tap at Bridgeport with Jeff. Pours a deep brown/black with tan foam. Smells of coffee. Tastes of coffee and vanilla. As a non-coffee drinker, this is possibly the best coffee beer I’ve had.
