“First brewed in the 1980s as a special beer for the BrewPub at BridgePort, Highland Ambush is making its triumphant return more than 20 years later. Stuart MacLean Ramsay, then pub manager, conceptualized the brew to pay homage to his Scottish heritage. This year’s Highland Ambush takes inspiration from the original ale using NW pale ale malt along with a Scottish crystal and roast malt. The hopping rate of Highland Ambush has been toned down to help highlight the complementing vanilla from the American oak bourbon barrels and caramel-toffee malt nuances. Reddish-Brown in color, Highland Ambush will warm the coldest of toes and noses this holiday season.

Bottle from the discount bin at Five Points Bottle Shop (Atl Highway). Rich fruity nose, citrusy, lightly smoky, and some small notes of oxidation. Hazy ruddy brown color. Brown sugar, sweet malt. It goes thin in mid palate. Light fruitiness. Medium body. Overall, a bit too sweet and sugary.

"you get the feeling this was a textbook scotch ale before the barreling. no frills, but spot om for the style, and tasty if you like peet. the barreling softens things up just a little (still less than 7%) and gives it an extra layer of sweetness, vanilla, and oak, but the smokiness still is the key player in the aroma and flavor. a nice ale."

22oz bottle 2/23/13 (Binny’s Naperville)-42° in Snifter-Pours brown with an off white head. Aroma of roasted malt, vanilla, caramel, and toffee. Taste of the same with some oak, smoke, and more vanilla. This medium to full bodied brew is well balanced and quite tasty. Nice job.

It poured a dark brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was of brown sugar and yeast. The taste was smokey with burnt sugar and a flavor that lingers on with a nice crisp finish. Decent.

Pours amber with a tan head. Aroma is caramel, oak and whiskey. Flavor follows nose and its not very sweet for a scotch ale.

22oz. bottle. Aroma of sweet, caramel malts, oak, herbal hop, tobacco and tinges of banana and dried leaves, some very light roast in the background. Hazy, iced tea-like amber-brown color, with a lasting, fine head. Flavor is sweet and lightly oaky, fruity and very gently bitter with suggestions of toffee, butterscotch, faint berry, nut and dried, leafy herb. Full, tangy palate with a medium body. I never would have pegged this as a Scotch Ale. More like an ESB.
