COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“First brewed in the 1980s as a special beer for the BrewPub at BridgePort, Highland Ambush is making its triumphant return more than 20 years later. Stuart MacLean Ramsay, then pub manager, conceptualized the brew to pay homage to his Scottish heritage. This year’s Highland Ambush takes inspiration from the original ale using NW pale ale malt along with a Scottish crystal and roast malt. The hopping rate of Highland Ambush has been toned down to help highlight the complementing vanilla from the American oak bourbon barrels and caramel-toffee malt nuances. Reddish-Brown in color, Highland Ambush will warm the coldest of toes and noses this holiday season.

22 oz. from Chuck’s. Probably not my best rating moment as I’m all stuffed up with a cold, but it seems this beer just lacks the flavor I’d expect. Despite the awesome label, this brew does not make me think of swashbuckling. Instead it’s a thin sweet beer with a slight spicy kick, probably due to the alcohol. Ho hum.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of toffee, malt, caramel, slight banana, and a hint of oak. Poured deep amber/brown in color with a tiny, off-white head that disappeared except for around the edges. Cloudy. Slightly sparkling. Full of small particles throughout. Flavor is light to medium sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of malt, slight vanilla, toffee, slight wood, vegetables, herbs, slight banana, and a little garbage. Medium body. Tingly, then dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, toffee, slight vanilla finish.

22oz bottle. Pours a hazy mahogany color. Aroma of grain, caramel, peat, vanilla. Flavor is wood, grain, peat, dried fruit. The bitterness is a bit much and unbalanced for the brew. There is a sourness in the finish. I’m not much a fan of this beer.

22 oz. bottle shared by Keir- thanks, Keir! Apparently he wanted to honor his LARP group or some such shit. Nerd. Anyway, this pours a cloudy amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma of toasted malts, brown sugar, nuts, and earth- pretty faint overall, though. Flavor of toast, brown sugar, nuts, and lives. Simple but not bad. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a toasty, malty mouthfeel. Very basic Scotch ale that gets the job done.
