KINGPIN is a full-flavored, red-colored ale that uses a rarely-grown Willamette Valley Hop varietal known as Liberty Hops from fourth generation hop farmer John Annen of Annen Bros. Farm in Silverton, Oregon. Jeff and his team of brewers also used rye and caramel malt leading to a unique flavor profile; triple-hopped for bitter aroma and a unique dry-hopped character.

Nice chestnut color with an overall very average aroma. Lots of beading! Smooth drink, a tasty ale, but nothing too different.

Bottle:   Pale amber, sudsy white head, moderately sized, spotty lacing.   Musty hop nose, slight pith and citrus zest.   A bit of dull candied citrus peel on the tongue.   Certainly a hoppy Amber, and on par for a Red Ale.   Pithy on the backside.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Not a big one, on the hoppier side, but with enough malt base to make it interesting.   Lingering pith.

Really good, well made but the rye isnt a favorite taste of mine but really adds another layer to this red. The hops shine through and pick it up, gives a little bite and pretty good, I liked it alot

Pours a light amber, very clear with a small amount of off-white foam. Aroma consists mainly of candy-like caramel sweetness and a bit of earthy spice, tiny bit of ground coffee in the background and a little fruity ester. Flavor is somewhat underwhelming, for something advertised as being triple hopped one would expect more of a hop presence. Hops here are tame and definitely lean more toward a noble in both flavor and aroma with earthy, floral, and spicey qualities. Mouthfeel is medium and is accentuated by the sweetness that seems a bit out of balance. Compared to other strong ales and especially those that would dub themselves as being a "red ale", this one is boring and relatively lifeless.

This is a very malty beer. Caramel, some nuttiness. I’m not entirely pleased with how the hops interact, however.

Draught (nitro) @ Hawthorne Hophouse. Rated on 11.07.2012
Aroma is sweet with fruits, peaches and honey. Flavour is hoppy with resin and some peaches. This has some hops that linger in my mouth for a long time and they do not feel nice.

Reddish amber with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel, citrus, and earth. Taste is rather mild; malty and a touch sweet with a mild hop presence. Medium body.

12 oz bottle. Pours a reddish copper color. Thick pearly head, nice lacing. Aroma is sweet, with toffee tones. Flavor is sweet but not cloying. There is a rich hop flavor, but it’s not overpowering. Rather than a citrusy hop nose, the hops come in the aftertaste along with the toffee malt flavors. Overall, I enjoyed this quite a bit. I would definitely buy it again.
