KINGPIN is a full-flavored, red-colored ale that uses a rarely-grown Willamette Valley Hop varietal known as Liberty Hops from fourth generation hop farmer John Annen of Annen Bros. Farm in Silverton, Oregon. Jeff and his team of brewers also used rye and caramel malt leading to a unique flavor profile; triple-hopped for bitter aroma and a unique dry-hopped character.

12 oz bottle. Pours a reddish copper color. Thick pearly head, nice lacing. Aroma is sweet, with toffee tones. Flavor is sweet but not cloying. There is a rich hop flavor, but itís not overpowering. Rather than a citrusy hop nose, the hops come in the aftertaste along with the toffee malt flavors. Overall, I enjoyed this quite a bit. I would definitely buy it again.

Bottle, 12 oz, poured into my favorite glass. Reddish amber in color with good sized off white head. Sweet malty nose, with a hint of citrus. Medium bodied, creamy taste. Good beer overall, maybe because it is a "double".

Draft - Aromatic hops and some caramel in the background. Amber hue with medium persistent head. Sweetness from the malts upfront easing into a hoppy bitterness. I think the bitterness is a bit over the top for the style.

One of my favorite beers. It is a well constructed double red ale that takes some time initially to get use to, but when poured in a glass lets out its full aroma. As a ginger I am always partial to Reds and as a long time fan of Grand Theft Auto I canít help but like the gangster appeal. For a mainstream widely distributed beer you can tell that a lot of effort was put into this beer and the double filtration is very apparent with its clean taste both initially and afterwards. It has an extremely filling taste that is sour and sweet at the end. Overall for the price I rank this as one of my favorite beers. Just be careful as the abv (7.5) can sneak up on you :P.

Poured into a wide flute glass. Deep red color with a thick, finger and half of tight dirty head. Really well put together. Big malt nose, small lemon and grapefruit, banana at the end. This is a bold taste. Lots of malt balanced with an equal large dose of hops. The bitterness wins out at the end with an uppercut to the tongue. It is a little unruly but worth it. Smooth and creamy texture with low carbonation. Works really well. A straightforward and bold flavor. Beautiful to look at. An enjoyable and different amber ale.

Bottle: Pours a dark auburn color with a creamy tan head. Picking up the florals and earthy hops in the aroma, as well as some bready malt. Flavor is more in the bready/caramel malts department with light floral hops. Much less hoppy than I was looking forward to.

Nothing special, but a good solid ale.

Caramel, resin, peach aromas. khaki head on clear amber. good blance of weight and fizz in the moth, aromatic. Hops win the the tussle just barely, with some pine, okay tang, a slightly overcooked caramel. balanced bitter finish.

Some bread in the nose; medium body, rather herby then bitter. Very drinkable with some sourness.

Bottle at home, from my NEW FAVOURITE GLASS!!!! How many ratings have I typed "from my Maudite glass"? Dozens certainly, hundreds almost for certain, perhaps the majority of my 1300+ to this point? Who knows for sure!?! But this last month I have seen the dawning of a new day. A day when my Minneapolis Town Hall glass is my new favourite glass! Anyhoo... Pours murky copper/red; thin off-white head, nice lacing. Nose is red fruit, caramel, tropical fruit, light spice, some real red rope licorice here too, along with perhaps a touch of something in the cinnamon family. Flavours of spice, red rope licorice and candies, some real red fruit and caramel, which suddenly dries, and the malt (Biscuit malt, perhaps?) begins to express itself in a husky/grainy fashion. Mildly tart, and very candy/licorice like, not really blowing me away here, something feels... off. Canít put my finger on it, but this doesnít really work.
