COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
KINGPIN is a full-flavored, red-colored ale that uses a rarely-grown Willamette Valley Hop varietal known as Liberty Hops from fourth generation hop farmer John Annen of Annen Bros. Farm in Silverton, Oregon. Jeff and his team of brewers also used rye and caramel malt leading to a unique flavor profile; triple-hopped for bitter aroma and a unique dry-hopped character.

12oz bottle in Seattle. Deeper brownish orange, off tan head. Sweet distant hops on rich ruddy malts. Creamy, yeasty body with tart fruity hops and dry hop finish. Indistinct, but tasty enough.

From a 355ml bottle on 19/12/2013. Pours a very reddy amber with the barest of heads. The aroma is primarily toffee and caramel malt. These also feature prominently in the flavour followed by a huge, lingering, dry, almost medicinal bitterness. Has a fullish body and medium carbonation. This is a big distinctive beer but lacks a bit of balance, with the bitterness just a little too harsh to make it really enjoyable.

On tap at the brewpub. Light mahogany with a biege head. Caramel malt, nutty, quite bitter, high carbonation, moderate body, very malty and yet bitter and dry on the finish. Well done but just not my thing.

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2014 12 oz bottle. The beer pours to a deep red/amber color. The aroma has a slight hop resin smell with a rye sweetness too. The taste has a smooth slightly sweet upfront rye flavor with a pretty dry finish.. Overall a good amber. red ale.

Rich brown coloured body with a copper glow and a thick, three centimetre tall tan, soapy head. Aroma of alcohol, malt, metal, nuts, earth and a very pungent english hop bitterness. Medium-bodied; Strong medicinal and herbaceous flavour with a lot of bitterness and pungent alcohol tastes coming from every corner. Aftertaste shows a big bitterness, some earthy malt and a lot of nuts - all with a strong alcohol flavour and even stronger medicinal flavour. Overall, a decent beer, but lacking in too many aspects and not showing enough nice depth to be considered a good beer. Still - great to try, and I already can’t wait to be back. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from La Bodega in Anchorage, Alaska on 04-October-2013 for US$1.50 sampled at home in Washington on 05-December-2013 a few hours before leaving back to Portland.

Bottle date: unk Pours clouded rust color with a central dome and surrounding bullae of soapy lighter tan bubbles. Smells like sweet caramel malt, some dank hops, some pine hops and a bit of soap. Flavor is spicy with some nice malts, a bit of special B character, tea, caramel, body odor, some resin and a bit of pine. Medium on syrup body with a lighter carbonation character. Overall not a bad beer, I’d drink this quite a few times. Serving type: bottle 11-04-2012
