KINGPIN is a full-flavored, red-colored ale that uses a rarely-grown Willamette Valley Hop varietal known as Liberty Hops from fourth generation hop farmer John Annen of Annen Bros. Farm in Silverton, Oregon. Jeff and his team of brewers also used rye and caramel malt leading to a unique flavor profile; triple-hopped for bitter aroma and a unique dry-hopped character.

Bottled 12 fl oz at Penny Blue, Melbourne. On July 29, 2013.
Hazy copper color, off-white head. Malty, sweet, caramel taste. Caramel and malty aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Sweet, malty scent.

I don’t know enough about American Strong as a category, but it seems that this might be classified differently. Pours red gold, nice pillowy white head. Moderate aromas - floral, yeast, hops. Taste is very well balanced and subtle - a gentle bitter, with a neutral malt framework. Good substance, a little chewy, I fond it to be very drinkable.

12oz bottle. Not the best red ale. Cloudy copper color, good lacing, rocky head. Bitter at the beginning, alcoholic/hoppy in the middle. Almost no linger/aftertaste. Bad for the style but not undrinkable.

Btl pours slight hazy, light amber color. Massive off white head that hangs on forever with very heavy lacing. Smells of floral hops, bread and molasses. Sweet candy/cookie taste that is followed by crisp, dry bitterness. Medium body, creamy texture with moderate carbonation. Very nice easy drinking beer considering the alcohol content. Nicely balanced, smooth ale. The hops chosen for this brew are fantastic. Beers like this make me like reds more and more.

On tap at BridgePort. Clear red with a thin beige head. Not much aroma to speak of. Taste is creamy, caramel malty, with a dry bitter metallic finish. Surprisingly plain for a "double" red ale.

Oil frothy staying head. Amber color. Hoppy but not like an IPA. Peppery. Mildly bitter aftertaste.

At Epic Beer Fest 2013. Clear amber under a thin foamy white head. Nose is really funky like hippie BO, with a floral resinous hop undertone. Flavor is really hoppy with some floral and pine resin up front, followed by some boozy sweet yet bitter caramel undertone. Too bitter overall without much hop nuance.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. A big dry dusty caramel malt nose. The flavor is very dry, fruity berries, some dusty caramel and malt, light bitter finish.

On tap at Skinny Slims. Pours a clear deep amber red with a creamy tan head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of grassiness with a backing sweet grain and hint of caramel. Flavor is similar with a nice grassy note supported by sweet grains and a touch of cookie.
