COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
KINGPIN is a full-flavored, red-colored ale that uses a rarely-grown Willamette Valley Hop varietal known as Liberty Hops from fourth generation hop farmer John Annen of Annen Bros. Farm in Silverton, Oregon. Jeff and his team of brewers also used rye and caramel malt leading to a unique flavor profile; triple-hopped for bitter aroma and a unique dry-hopped character.

A triple hopped beer, where have I seen that before? It pours a clear amber/red with a frothy white head that dissipates with a bit of lacing. The smell is very sweet in the aroma. Very basic actually, not much hops at all. It has a little bit of candied orange and vanilla icing, not what i was expecting. The flavor is sweet and tangy with a medium bitterness. It is mostly malt-driven and the malts just are super flat, they do nothing to compliment the hops. The hops are mainly citrusy but also a bit tangy. There is a hint of vegetal bitterness in the finish. I had a NN last night and can’t help but compare the two, this one pales. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-20-2011 21:02:59

Reddish amber in color, clear with a thin head. Hops where floral and light fruit. Big malt bomb this brew was. The hops are taken over by the malt sweetness. This was a easy drinking brew.

Bottle from Friar Tuck in Peoria, IL. Mostly clear reddish amber pour with a spotty white head. Mild caramel, and a heavy dose of artificial sweetener. Ooff, the sweetener. This isn’t very drinkable.

Deep amber with a cream head. Nose is laffy taffy, hops, faint bitterness, and fruits. Decent palate, flavor is super sweet, definitely not triple hopped, and chewy.

Pours clear orange-red with nice off white head, aroma has nice notes of rye, biscuit, toffee with some spice, grass and pine hops to back it, touch of earth in there as well. Taste is nice spice, rye, grass, some slight metallic notes, goes into more rye, toffee and caramel, finishing slightly bitter.

12 ounce bottle - $1.49 at Olde Crabapple Bottle Shoppe in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Appearance: Slips out a clear, dark amber-toned body with a frothing, just off-white head.

Smell: Sweetish, caramel-scented maltiness, a pinch of rye grain, and some faintly lemony, savory spiced hops. Seems a bit timid.

Taste: Sweet-tasting caramel and a dose of crusty, toasted rye bread with an addition spoonful of raw sugar opens things up. Complimentary earthy spiciness from the Liberty hops used. Moderately bitter, but it drops off the palate in a heartbeat (if not faster), leaving you to make take the long road back to Sugar Town. Mildly citrusy. Some additional berry-esque fruitiness, like a muted strawberry, though it remains light. Slightly savory taste of autolyzed yeast. Sweetish on the soft finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Touts being triple hopped, so, like Miller Lite, it’s "triple hops brewed." I gotta say, it just doesn’t come together for me and there’s really not much to this one, especially with a name like Kingpin (an, at times, understated Spider-Man villain).
