COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Barley Wine Style Ale is brewed with double amounts of malts and hops to create a rich, mahogany colored, resinous brew. Aged for three full months before release, this ale is complex, strong, malty and full of character.

Clear chestnut, little head. Pungent aroma, dominated by sweet malty ambrosia, with caramel, bread, and a light fruitiness of oranges and plums. Flavor is medium sweet, vinous, with whisky, oak and cherry notes. Evinces a dry nutty bitterness. A bit too much effervescence to appreciate the taste fully, but some age could help that.

Enjoyable "big" beer--big flavors of raisin, caramel, alcohol, spices, and warming acids. Deep red/amber color. Sweet but not especially sticky. Something seemed out of balance. There's a sharp edge in the finish. (on tap, BridgePort BrewPub, Portland)

2003. Bright and clear old cherry wood color with only a small cover of heavy cream colored bubbles. Caramel, rum butter, apricots, and light chocolate with undertones of alcohol and resin. Oily start leads to a medium body which seems to become watery in during the taste. Earthy malt and fermented/over ripe fruit flavors. Very strong and lasting bitterness in the finish. I would have to say a prefer a malty finish.

First off, it's ugly as all hell. No head, and a weird kind of see-through purple color. A little bit of cherries in the otherwise boring aroma. Very thin and even a little fizzy. I pick up some nyquil underneath all that fizz. I can drink it, but only because I'm a sucker for barleywines. This is way short of what I'm looking for though. I won't be buying this again, especially because there's so many more to choose from that are so much better (Full Sail, Victory, DogFish Head Immort Ale, etc.). No complexity or anything interesting in a positive way at all.

bottle-sampled at joeT's house alongside aceofhearts. Nice Vicous appearance in the tulip glass. Nice deep garnet hue. Hops in the flavors, but alcohol is also detected but the sweet malts try to mask it. Not that well infused. Could use 1-2 years of aging.

Bottle. Fizzy, reddish-amber. Strong-fruity aroma. Thick pour, a bit effervescent looking. Grapefruit and Chinook hoppish-tasting, quite strong and challenging. Sour, especially in the finish. Decent.

(Vintage 2003) - What we have here is a gorgeous garnet body topped by a fluffy tan head. Glass lacing is very nice. Much more head than you typically see on a barley wine. The aroma is very fruity: cherries and plums mainly. There is also a good amount of sweet caramel and a tad bit of roasted malt. The flavor is also very fruity, yum, lots of plum with cherries lingering in the back. Not much sweetness and a medium amount of bitterness. Body is full and creamy. A bit different than the typical barley wine, but a very nice beer none the less.

Beer pours a reddish amber with a off white head that mostly dissipates. Aroma is rather restrained with notes of alcohol, hints of malt and hops. Flavor is good but doesn't have the depth of the great barleywines. Nice maltiness with good hop bitterness to offset the malt, just not near enough depth to get the juices flowing.

An intense brew, but a mild barley wine, sweet malty nose, hints of caramel and roasted malts in the flavor, alcohol enthused finish, the body isnt extremely thin, but its not as strong as I'd like it to be, end.

Nice brown/ruby color, small off white head that faded quickly but left a small lace behind. The aroma was malty and sweet with maybe a slight metallic smell coming through, light caramel.Nice flavor of malt and fruit with a decent hop presence and the alcohol coming through in a mild amount.Nice light body with a good malt hop after taste and light finish.Decent and fairly drinkable brew, that is well worth trying just for the non-heavy feeling that alot of Barley's tend to have.
