4.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 bhensonb (7579) - Woodland, California, USA - DEC 20, 2007
Word from the brewmaster at the brewpub is that this recipe is the one now used for ESB. So: Cask at the brewpub at the brewery. Clean caramel aroma. Clear dark amber color. Off-white head that sticks around. Soft, luscious, fruity, malty with floral/fruity hop. The bitter balancing the malt does not seem to be pine or citrus. Fresh floral/fruity finish, hints of malt here at the end, mild bitter, and some possible citrus sour at the back of the mouth. Fantantastic.

I found this beer to be a very relaxing brew with a nice head and diverse flavor levels. Honestly, I think it’s one of the best Am. Pale Ales out there in decent distribution.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 GreatStelle (363) - Chico, California, USA - AUG 3, 2003
Hey what's with the low ratings. This beer is a classic pale ale. Tastes alot like english pale ales and is similar to a sierra nevada. It does lack the hops but is very drinkable.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 beermatrix (1497) - Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA - JUN 3, 2004
Lighter copper color, clear body, small thin off-white cap, little lacing. Aroma is a bit on the fruity side with some melon, a bit of citrus tones from hops and slight pine, buttery sweet and clean, but a bit too sweet, more hop tones needed I think. Taste is much better, but not a bad drinker, sweetly fruity with more then enough malts, melon-like, pears and dull apples mark the flavors mostly, some hoppy things approach the finish with a bit of grassy spice and pine but lacks depth with a very mild little bite. Feel is shy of medium with a lower carbonation and malty sweetening thats a bit sticky upfront but it drys out some for the finish. Not a bad drinker, just a slightly better then average pale with more of a malt rendered approach which may suit some, but not I said me.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 AxeMaster221 (343) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAR 5, 2002
A fairly light ale, but very drinkable if you like the type.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Gusler (2654) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JAN 7, 2004
The color translucent amber color with the head pythonic in size, spumous in texture and the color a very light tan as it slowly disintegrates a thick and clinging sheet of lace is formed upon the glass. Sweet malt dominates the front of this nose, under lying is a slight lime like aroma, crisp, clean and refreshing to the senses, start is lightly sweet, adequately malted, top is light in feel. Finish is strict in its acidity, the hops present but unassuming in their spiciness, quite dry and lingering aftertaste, a drinkable beer from a favorite brewery, may need to sample a few of these to get a real feel for them, but a light as it is, a good lawnmower beer, nuttin’ wrong with that.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - JUN 1, 2002
UPDATED: DEC 17, 2003 Pours with a very creamy and consistent head, with tiny bubbles. The aroma is crystal malt abundance, freshly toasted biscuits, with underlying vinous notes suggesting tropical fruits (mangos). The tiny bubbles provide a very crisp and semi-full edge to the palate. Initially, the hops try to make an appearance before the crystal malt assault. This has striking similarities to Fat Tire, which, at best, provides for a good session beer. On the other hand, this is about as good as an English-style pale can be. Note: This is not bottle conditioned, as are their other beers.
