This year’s Stumptown Tart gathers 15-pounds of Oregon marionberries, raspberries and strawberries from local growers at Willamette Valley Fruit Company for each barrel of this tasty warm weather favorite. To give a different twist to the base beer, Brewmaster Jeff Edgerton used a new malt from Great Western Malt called “Superior Pilsen”. The team is also using wheat malt for some mouthfeel, a slight permanent haze and a lighter color that should serve to accentuate any pinks and reds extracted from the berries. In addition, one-third of the base beer will be fermented with “Ardennes” Belgian yeast to give a light Belgian character and add to the complexity of the profile.

Tasted on 6/8/12 from a capped 22oz bomber bottle. Pours light orange with a pink tint and an average white head that leaves very thin lace. The nose is pretty simple, tart fruits, particularly strawberry, with some light malt. The flavor features the fruits a little sweeter with some tartness and the same light malt. The body is light with lively carbonation and a medium tart and sweet finish.

Bottle, shared with Grippitis. Light orange body (I’d be lying if I called this pink, because it isn’t), average white head. Estery profile with tart red fruits, grainy malts. Not bad.

Amber color, pink hue. Blueberries and strawberries in the nose. Very fruity. Very carbonated fruity mouth. Very little depth beyond the fruit. Fairly boozy for the strength. Pretty boring.

The beer even looks fruity with a cloudy reddish orange pour. Very fruity and tart aroma, light strawberry stands out. Nice carbonation and medium bodied. Wheaty, yeasty flavor up front leading to strawberry and cherry middle. Finishes with lingering yeast notes, with some lingering blueberry. I made note of the blueberries before I googled exactly what a marionberry was by the way. I don’t know why this one is rated so low, it’s a fruit beer that tastes like real fruit, not some additive or adjunct. Very enjoyable.

22 oz bottle shared. Peachy reddish cloudy appearance with a minimal foam and no lacing. Fruity and sweet light candy-like aroma. Light body and a thin watery feel with carbonation. Mostly fruity and sweet, with very light tartness. Kind of bland and disappointing.
