   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 6/10   PALATE 2/5   OVERALL 12/20
Alengrin (2464) - BELGIUM - AUG 8, 2014
Classic Van Honsebrouck ale, in existence since many years, used to be sweeter and, if I am not mistaken, somewhat darker, but this rating concerns the current version. Very thick, rocky but eventually collapsing and opening, snow-white, crackling foam over a deep golden blonde (’old gold’) beer with quiet sparkling. Yeasty aroma with impressions of green apple, lemon zest, soap, freshly cut grass, banana peel, hay, gin, unripe pear, also some plastic-like solvents and vegetable-like DMS. Adding the yeast deposit leads to more sweet fruitiness and bread-like aromas, as well as an equally misty robe. Taste begins with unripe fruits and citrus peel, strong, mineral-like carbonation, dry, yeasty, slender maltiness, bit thin mouthfeel for a beer this strong, spicy notes, finishing with grassy hoppiness, long, but unfortunately also a bit phenolic and, more than anything, a strong presence of rather astringent, wodka-like alcohol. I’m guessing they tried to evolve in a Duvel-like direction like so many others have attempted and if my memory doesn’t fail me, the older batches (twenty years ago) were softer, sweeter and more interesting, with less astringent alcohol.

Niet mijn ding. Alhoewel een klassieker, vind ik het toch één van de mindere belgische bieren

Bottle, 33cl. Golden colour, white foam. Medium carbonation. Sweet with fruity notes and bitter finish. Not very well balanced. Ok beer.

Dark golden. Foamy white head. Aroma of maize, sugar, some bitterness and boiled vegetables. Unfresh taste, with sugar and some bitterness. Equally unfresh aftertaste.

Helder levendrig bier met schuim. Smaak is hoppig bitter en kruidig, citrus, koriander. Blijft redelijk lang hangen.

Bottle on the train to Poperinge. Almost clear golden liquid with huge white head. Aroma of grain, corn, sugar, banana, clove and light booze. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with notes of grain, sugar and banana. Medium bodied with high carbonation. Pretty bad...

Aroma of malts and yeast, a bit fruity. Appears clear golden with a white head. The taste is lightly sweet and medium bitter towards the finish. Medium body, heavy carbonation. A bit metallic too. Alcohol is prominent. Not a special strong ale.

Couleur dorée, petite mousse blanche. Nez légerement malté. Gout de levure, épices legères, note agrumes et alcool. Fin rapide. Une duvel bien moins bonne, mais pas mal qd meme.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2014 Bottle. Pours a clear yellow/amber colour, almost perfect foam head. Aromas are fresh vegetables, spinach; yoghurt (quark), fresh grains, hemp, distant hint of raisins. A little boozy if one sniffs too fervently. Very acidic and coppery/metal first taste. Subsequently, taste begins a little wheaty and sour, but elegantly develops to a sensational sweet/sour high that reminds of early (green) wheat/grain, cherries (little booziness from this as well), slight hint of nettle infused with nutmeg. Raisins in the aftertaste again, followed by grains. Lovely.
