Commercial Description:
The Blowhard Pale is an American-style pale ale with a bracing citrus aroma, and crisp Cascade hop character. It is the perfect accompaniment to spicy foods or fish and chips.

Golden colour with small white head which is persistent. Medium citrus hop aroma. Strong immediate bitterness which is also slightly woody. Thick texture and a long aftertase. A bit one-dimensional but it tastes good emough.

Bottle. Citrus hops on the nose. Full mouthfeel, quite yeasty, with grapefruit. The finish brings more grainy malt and eartthy hops.

Bottle. Pours hazy pale amber with big fluffy white head that lasts well. The aroma is very nice - floral hoppy with touch of citrus. Palate is very fizzy with a medium body. Flavour starts with a refreshing floral / citrus taste moving into some malty sweetness but leading to a brutal bitter finish which is deceptive, intially it seems very pleasing but then it turns harsh and that aspects stays. Doesn’t quite work for me.

Bottle -- Cloudy yellow with extremely fine and active carbonatin. Very little head but what there is lasts and leaves some lacing. Pretty standard (and delicious) APA aroma with sweet/sour citrus. NIce soft palate and a nce sour grapefruity kick to the flavour. I agree with highlandlad about the harsh finish, but a very nice drop just the same.

Expected to like this more than I did. For an APA, it’s thick and syrupy, rather than refreshing, with an astringently bitter finish. It’s not the prettiest ale, murky dun with so much swirling spent yeast that it resembled the contents of a sewer. But at least this sewer retained a froth. Fairly muted aroma for the style. Bit of wort, Berocca, sherbet lemons, powdered ginger and tropical fruit cordial. Not off-putting but not especially appetising, either. Thick mouthfeel for the style, undercarbonated and chewy. Faint caramel malt notes provide some spine but the hops steamroll all in their path. Odd Berocca chemical off-note. The finish is dry and coarse. I can’t recall ever tasting a beer containing Cascade that finished as harsh as this one. Bit puzzled by this. Does a lot of things right but plenty of room for improvement IMO. (330ml bottle from Cloudwine Cellars, Melbourne)
