voota (754), Melbourne, Australia Nov 13, 2007 Pours clear brown/amber with a small off-white head. Very sweet aroma, shows some tobacco, peach nectar, toffee, bush honey and cinnamon, very complex. Body at first is very spicy in carbonation and alcohol, but as it settles for a few minutes it seems to get a whole lot smoother, though it still remains quite hot and sweet. Flavours include cloves, charred wood, brown sugar, stonefruit and alcohol. The finish is hot, very sweet and alcoholic with a lingering bitterness and warmth. An excellent beer, surely will improve with age too.
Chrism86 (40), Melbourne, Australia Jul 18, 2008 Presents a rather appealing dark brown colour with orange highlights, sporting a nice tan head. Aromas are rather reserved. The most notable being dried fruits, with a noticeable degree of malt sweetness. Flavours are in the same vein, producing dark liquered raisins and accompanying spice. The late onset of some dark chocolate characters helps to keep the sweetness in check, and add balance and complexity to the palate. Finishes with a slight hint of warming alcohol. Pyobon (137), Sydney, Australia Feb 11, 2008 Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy brown orange with no head. Complex aroma of raisins, malt maybe coffee and tobacco. Full bodied with plenty of fine carbonation giving a creamy / fluffy feel rather than fizzy. The flavour starts with a refreshing fruity foretaste developing a malty sweetness that rapidly becomes a rich complex mix dominated by raisins (Tokay as Stew41 suggested) with some bunt / bitter (dark chocolate?) flavours and plenty more. Overall a very good beer but not quite balanced - a little too raisiny and the burnt bitter notes are a little strong. Stew41 (860), Caulfield, Australia Feb 10, 2008 A big step forward for strong Australian beers. Although the brewery classifies as a dubbel is really is pushing into a fruity imperial for my tastes (and perhaps the 8.5% abv supports this view). Very much a malt and fruity story with dark liquered fruits that share some ground with a tokay desert wine, but the weight never gets heavy of cloying (notwithstanding the brandied character). Lightens out at the finish before some warming spicey alcohol kicks. The structure is very light and fluffy; a lamb in wolves clothing? bluevegie (1732), Perth, Australia Nov 19, 2007 Pours a dark ruby red with a very short lasting tan head. Aroma is of sweet dark fruits, spice and bonox. Bit of a dull taste though it seems almost full bodied, enjoyed the alcohol and the fruits. Overall fairly good.
