Garnet coloured with a small but persistent beige head. Strong choccolate malt aroma. A roasty variety of chocolate flavour with some elements of fruit towards the finish. Texture is quite thin.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin, one half centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of prunes, raisins, grapes, figs, and other pitted fruits - potent sweetness and fruity notes. Medium-bodied; Assertive malty flavour with a ton of raisin and prune notes, a touch of grapes and light chocolate and finishes with a dry, musty malt flavour. Aftertaste is relatively mild, but the chocolate, malt and far and away the strongest taste is still the fig and prune flavours. Overall, not such a great beer - but nice to try on the opposite side of the world, especially after a year and nine months time. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Slowbeer in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 31-December-2009 for AU$6.00 sampled on the opposite side of the planet at home in Washington on 02-October-2011.

Bottle & Tap - Pours dark brown colour. Strong chocolate and roasted fruit flavours hits the spot nicely. Beer tasted very fresh and kept nice and simple.

Bottle. This was a real gusher! Despite sitting undisturbed in the fridge for days before opening this immediately frothed all over the place. Pours dark brownish ruby with a huge tan head that lasts ages. Aroma is fairly sweet with notes of roasted malt, milk chocolate, dates, raisins and boiled sweets. Flavour is less sweet and fruity than the aroma but still has plenty of roast malt, bitter dark chocolate and licorice with more subtle hints of raisins, apples and candy. Light mouthfeel with high carbonation and lots of bitterness that lingers long on the finish. Quite a good porter overall, pity its so volatile in the bottle.

Bottle. Dark brown. Admittedly I poured this into a tulip, but a crazily huge tan head - it was well out of bottle when I started to pour. Aroma of roasted malt, tart apple juice and chocolate. Tastes sweet then quite sour, with some coffee bitterness and apple sourness/ acidity at the finish. Medium body. Some toasted nut and soy sauce, too. A bit wacky, but I liked it.

Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Nose shows masses of dark chocolate, sweet licquorice, roasted barley, and unfortunately, some salty vegemite. Very rich. Flavours are overshadowed by that some salty, tangy vegemite note, almost sour. There’s a fair bit of roasted barley in there and an assertive roasty bitterness follows. But its all partially ruined by that wierd, salty, tangy flavour. Rich, creamy carbonation, but a little full-on.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2009 Bottle. Very good porter. Aromas of coffee, apple, and chocolate. Flavour is sweet, with bitterness at the end and good length. Silky palate and medium body. Dark brown, head is frothy, and with good retention.

Bottle. Pours murky brown with a creamy tanned head. Aroma is strong of roasted malt and dark chocolate but this fades in the flavour. It’s very sweet and almost sugary/candy which follow through to the finish. There’s very low bitterness in the mouthfeel as well. An OK porter but I found this a little too flawed to want to go back for another bottle.

330ml bottle. Thick and rich black colour with a nice tan coffee coloured head. Chocolate and almond aromas fill the nose and coffee flavours burst into the mouth. Robust and complex and very moreish.

I’ve had this on multiple occasions (bottled) and its always grumpy and aggressive upon pouring. Colour is dark brown with some ruby highlights, towering tan coloured head. Nose shows dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. Palate is much of the same with a touch of sweet malt to add balance. Very lively carbonation (bit of a turn off) Finishes with dry roasted malt and medium earthy hop bitterness.
