The Bitter Californian is a hybrid between a traditional English Best Bitter and the wonderfully aromatic Californian Pale Ales. Our brewers, Chris (the bitter one?) and Brett (the Californian one) have combined their love of English malts and American hops to create a delicious new beer. Chris has devised the malt recipe from some of the finest English malts that have provided the base to the classic best bitter for years. Brett has used his love for new and interesting hop varieties to pick 3 hops that will give delicious flavours and aromas.
The hops are Newport (Kaffir lime leaves & citrus rind aromas), Chinnook (lime zest and lemon balm) and Nugget (sherbet lemons), these will both bitter the beer and provide flavour and aroma. We will also be dry-hopping this beer to give extra hop character.

Draft from The Lescar, Sheffield. On draft it pours with a light tan thick head over a deep ruby brown body. Aroma wise its malty, fruity with a hint or caramel and chocolate. It tastes a lot lighter than it looks with toffe passing to malts and then cirtus with a slightly bittre finish. I was pleasenty surprised to find this in Sheffield. Bristol Beer factory tend to produce good qualiyt beers and this did not disappoint.

Cask conditioned at The White Horse, Leamington Spa, Warks. Copper with off white head. There is a really pleasing depth to this bitter, rich, dark malts, a hint of chocolate, some roastiness then a lingering dry bitterness, pretty hoppy, leafy and lingering. A very decent beer, served really well.

Cask. Pours a dark brown, aroma is floral mixed with caramel. Taste is initially slightly sweet and malty, then gives way to a tasty bitterness. Medium body with an oily texture. Overall a nice balance between caramel malt and tasty American hops.

Cask at the York Tap. Pours a lovely amber, with a good white head that lasts, good lacing. Touch of spritz. Good lemon and lime aromas, alongside solid caramel malts. Taste is just a touch too bitter for me, for the style, would suit an IPA better. Not well-balanced. nice enough though.
