A wonderful blend of berry fruit and liquorice to work alongside the roasted malt flavours from the stout. Dangerously drinkable and a great drink to accompany a range of sweet desserts.

4th of 12 from the 12 stouts selection box. Good as pitch with the now-customary cratered beige collar and thickness of condition. Relatively muted aroma with hints of burnt toast and nuts. Good roasty, overly done toast base streaked attractively with mildly sour blackcurrant. Really digging that mellow, dark chocolate-robed edge. The liquorice has vanished. Crumb of dry roasted fennel seed. Above average but weakest of the box so far...

500 ml bottle.
Pours a black colour with a creamy white head. Aroma of is rather weak with some roastiness and blackcurrant. Flavour is rather interesting; strong tart blackcurrant, grass, chocolate, salty licorice and hay. Light bodied, slick mouthfeel and a roasty, slightly tart and berryish finish. Blackcurrant seems to work quite nicely in this beer.

Bottle as part of the 12 stouts of Christmas. Near black with a small but tight, off-white head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, liquorice and roasted malts. Flavour had more chocolate, some tart blackcurrants and a hint of spice, leading to a dry finish. Very good.

Bottle from Ales by Mail. Pours very dark brown with a big creamy tanned head. Aroma of burnt malt and liquorice. Taste is light sweet and roasty, dark fruits, lingering fruity, almost no traces of the liquorice, except in the utter finish, wouldn´t mind more bitter liquorice for balance.Smooth mouthfeel.

Bottle at home from the 2012 12 stouts of christmas. Pitch black with a light borwn head that stays around and a bit of lacing. Aromas are earthy chalky coffee, but are subdued .Flavour is bitter coffer.Tart black current in the finish. I do not get a lot od liquorice. Pickley carbonation

Bottle @ Bruce’s. Massive thanks to me. The pour’s deep brown with a small head. The nose is mildly unpleasant. I get a bit of vomit, aniseed, some stewed vegetable. A bit of tangy dark fruits. The taste is dark berry jam, roasted malts. A bit of cake icing. Medium body. Quite carbonated, perhaps overly so. Overall, not great. One of Bristol’s lesser beers.

(Bottle, 0.5 l, courtesy of VastActive, 20130713) The beer poured almost black. Its head was medium sized and light brown. Aroma had roasted malts, sweetness and chocolate. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, chocolate, roasted malts, hint of berries and medium bitterness. Aftertaste was ashy, sweet and bitterness. Not a bad brew but not impressive either.

500ml bottle. Pitch black colour with average to huge, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Dry, minimally roasty dark malty aroma, a touch of liquorice, subtle hints of dark berries and tobacco. Taste is initially dry dark malty, subtle sweet fruity undertones with hints of blue and other dark berries, a tart touch flashes up, later the sweetness fades away and leaves room for dry, minimally salty and minimally roasty dark malty flavours.
