Unclear medium to dark red amber colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, dark fruit, light candy. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and light moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20121208]

Bottled 2012 vintage. Ambery brown colour with a small head. Aroma is nutty, caramel, some slight nutmeg, floral notes as well as mild alcohol. Flavour is fruity and floral with some nutty and caramelly notes along with some fudge, alcohol and mild toasted notes. Some wood and vanilla in the finish.

500ml bottle from Utobeer. Clear ruby red with lasting beige head. Aroma of dry malt and fruity malt. Flavour of fruits, milk choc, some alcohol, some hop tingle on finish. Good warming beer. Quite a lot of sticky sediment stuck to bottom of bottle. Good warm beer.

Pleasant old nutty roasty aroma, but not so big. Dry nutty palate. English estery almondy componts come out in the aroma and retronasals later. Soft palate, nice carbonation. High drinkability for the strength, but the very dry attenuation makes it drying.

Cask at the White Horse, during the Old Ale Festival. Pours clear, shiny ruby with a faint head. Decent hop aroma, some sweet bread, crackers. Medium sweet flavor, with fresh toast, grass, candy and toasty grain. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Faintly warming finish, sticky, quite bitter, more grass, some wood, toasted sugars. Not bad overall.

Bottle from My Favourite Beers, Cheltenham, 11.02.12 consumed the same day in new Frank at Brierfields campsite, Cheltenham, Glos after a day of Morris dancing at Cheltenham Folk Festival Pours hazy brown with a head that swiftly departed. Malty and with a good depth of flavour, the oakiness showing along with a good hoppy profile. Plenty of dark fruits and some hedgerow ones as well but its the big maltiness that I find most striking and enjoyable. I have to confess to drinking this very late in the day after quite a few beers so my notes were at best sketchy, but I enjoyed this and will have to try and age one for the future. Erm, the 2012 version (exactly the same recipe as 2011??). Pale chestnut topped with creamy beige. Rich, plummy, deeply Belgian aroma with suggestions of cinder toffee, almond, Shep-like hopcone. A sniffer. Slick, weighty, rich malt and oak softness with hints of liquorice, berries, yeast extract, smooth oak and sweet almond. Mature, elegant sipper.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov 2011) Dark brown colour with hints of ruby when seen through light. Brief, bubbly head. Malty, fruity nose with caramel, dried fruit, raisins and coffee. Malty, roasted taste with notes of coffee, raisins, prunes, red berries (raspberries?) and a slightly bitter-sweet finish. Medium body, with a slight sweetness and a decent bitterness. Well balanced, tasty and quite nice.

Cask-conditioned at the Three Tuns, Bristol 14/11/2011. Reddish-amber with a decent, off-white head. Aroma of red berry fruit, caramel, cereal malts and a touch of citrus hop. Flavour had more fruit, biscuity malts and ended with a bitter finish with a touch of warming alcohol. Very enjoyable.

Pours hazy copper color with a medium sized off-white head. Aroma is quite faint with some nuts, malts and dried fruits. Flavor of malts, dried ripe fruits, some nutty notes, wood, hints of toffee and mild hay. Quite straightforward and flawless. Has a mouth-drying effect. Decent.
