3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DanielBrown (2717) - Birmingham (via Leicester), West Midlands, ENGLAND - MAY 19, 2012
Bottle from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Pours black, with a receding beige head. Smells faintly herby. The flavour is a bit medicinal, before any stoutiness kicks in. Chilli pepper finish, mild fruit jam middle and hot malt start. Not enough stout qualities: no smoothness, no charcoal, no cocoa. A smidge harsh and more of a spicy strong UK Ale. OK
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 jackl (727) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 8, 2012
Bottle at Scopey’s CBC Tune-Up. Pours black with a tiny off-white head. The nose is light bitter roasted malts and light sugary raspberry fruit. The taste is very sugary raspberry fruits, tangy alcoholic coffee and more chocolate. Zesty and nimble on the tongue. Medium body, soft carbonation. Overall, a pretty good stout from Bristol, it stood out from most of the others.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Scopey (1659) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 8, 2012
Bottle at my Pre-CBC Tune-Up Tasting. It pours very dark brown, with a thin beige head. The nose is raspberry, charcoal, roasted malt and jam. The taste is raspberry, jammy fruit, varnish, roasted malt, charcoal, toast, spice, treacle and alcohol warmth, with a dry-roasted finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. The amount of raspberry is just right. Well balanced. One of the best BBF stouts out there.

Bottle. Black with a pleasant fruitiness. Some bitterness as well.Alcohol is understated and this makes for a very pleasant but dangerous stout.

50 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK via Beer Ritz Leeds. Dense black, bitter chocolate and fruit aroma. Creamy texture, more chocolate with subtle tartness. Really nice as it warms, not cloying but balanced with a semisweet finish.

3rd December 2011 ChrisOs Early December Tasting. Opaque black beer, good tan head. Light palate, semi dry. Smooth dark malt supports mildly tart raspberry. The malt turns creamy before the semi dry finish. Nicely joined up enjoyable fruit stout.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 DruncanVeasey (5145) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - MAR 1, 2012
Bottle. Reflective, onyx beer with a shrinking tan head. Strong cough medicine aroma (Benelin?), with tar, ink and chocolate notes if you go sniffing. Heavy, disjointed cough medicine flavour; thin and a little Baltic-salty. Twiglet-stirred. Solid base beer engulfed by medicinal weirdness. I like BBF and I like their stouts but this doesn’t work for me.

Bottle. Opaque black in colour with a decent, frothy tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, caramel, a whiff of charcoal and some raspberry fruit. Flavour had plenty of chocolate sweetness before some lingering, tart raspberries culminating in a gently dry finish. Excellent.
