Inspired by the amazing hoppy beers being brewed by American craft brewers this beer is heavily hopped, packing it with tropical fruit flavours and aromas. Pineapple, passion fruit & grapefruit are the dominant features of this beautiful amber ale, that has a big strong malt backbone to balance out all the hops.

Cloudy amber ale with a frothy head. Aroma is, unsurprisingly, strong hop but it has a tinge of citrus and possibly a sweeter fruit to it as well. Taste matches that though not as strong as you might expect from the scent, but it’s balanced nicely. There’s fruit in the finish but almost a toasty hint as well. Delicious.

[Bottled, at the Great British Beer Festival, 2015 - Tutored tasting with Roger Protz] - Bristol Beer Factory Southville Hop IPA, 6.1%, bright amber, clear. Grapefruit, pinewoods, herbs on the nose. Sweet tropical fruit, medicinal notes very strong, herbs there too. Middle is floral, still very alcoholic. As is the finish. Cloyingly sweetish aftertaste of oranges and alcohol. Bah!

500ml bottle @Mad for Beer (Rome). Pours a light amber color, unclear, with a medium and persistent off-white head. Aroma of malt, grassy hops, pine and grapefruit. Flavour is balanced between malt and hops, medium sweet with a medium bitter end. Medium body, medium to light carbonation. Ok.

Fruit punching its way out of the glass (Lemon zest + Pineapple + Peach). Body not as hoppy (malt lends a Bitter-esque balance) but a v bitter finish (in a good way) which makes the whole thing together as a bit better than just a big hop-smacking water-fest. I’ll put it on record: I, for one, would happily go South-ville!

50cl bottle at home from Beerritz. Body is clear to opalescent orange copper, head is small, white, average lasting, excellent lacing. Nose is citric, flavor is grapefruit, licorice, caramel, spices, quinine. Light sweet, heavy hoppy bitter. Finish is long lasting hoppy heavy bitter. Full body, dry texture, average carbonation. Not too easy but refreshing, simple, good hoppy beer.

6,5% ABV Nice deep gold. Thin soapy head. Nose is full of grapefruit, passion fruit and pineapple. The hint of malty sweetness is a nice invitation to a good time. Nicely carbonated first mouthful. Brief kiss of piney limey vapors and then its all about getting naked and jumping in the sack with a bed full of bitter hops. The hops are crackling fresh, resinous and full of herbaceous flavor notes, with grass, raw Kafir lime leaf and pine sap. A very nice effort and reminiscent of another well hopped ale, Buxton’s Axe Edge, which still stays on top. Again, bottle conditioned, so leave that last 10ml or so alone unless you like a mouthful of yeasty goodness.
