4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml bottle from the Romsey Beer Emporium. A deep amber pour with a dense cream head; there’s a rich tropical fruit aroma fromthe moment the bottle is opened; the mouthfeel is soft and thick with some initial sweet tropical fruits, but immediately overtaken by the intensity of the hops giving a piney, grapefruit bitterness that contasts with the passion fruit body. This is definitely a great interpretation of the American IPA style. Excellent.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Full of powerful malty flavour. One pint is never enough... Still my favourite strong hopped IPA.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at Old Bulls Head, Newcastle under Lyme. Pours golden with a white head. Sweet pine hop, boozy finish but well balanced. Very good.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bright, slightly cloudy orange with a thin head leaving light lace. Firm malt aroma with tropical hops. Marmaladey bitterness, and a stale/musty component which doesn’t actually detract from the beer that much. Some light hops aromatics peek through, but this is an older example. Still a fine beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cloudy, orange-gold pour with a thin white head. Tropical, passionfruit, pine, citrus aromas with nice malt underneath it all. Sweet, malty, but with tropical fruit and a bit of a bitter kick. Nice amount of carbonation but tiny little bubbles, gives it a good creamy feel. Bloody good beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Another gem from this solid brewer. Produces up a misty, lustrous, sunny amber with a lasting, tight, snow white foam that weaves a thick lace. Juicy and heavily resinous nose that oozes melon, grapefruit, pale stone fruits, orange peel and pine. Quite soft on the palate with a creamy and smooth finish made just that little bit rough from the bright hopping. Massive assertive bitterness that edges floral and resinous. Rose water meets camphor and nettles in the lengthy finish. A goid amount of tropical fruit esters fill it out with a grainy, biscuity malt base to keep it grounded. There is a touch of the 6.5 ABV that enhances everything around it. This is lipsmacking good ale. Balanced to a ’T’ with plenty of atoma and flavour, and still light enough to smash back all afternoon. Delicious! (50cL, BB 26/10/15, Luckies Liquor, East Vic. Park)

2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
[Bottled, at the Great British Beer Festival, 2015 - Tutored tasting with Roger Protz] - Bristol Beer Factory Southville Hop IPA, 6.1%, bright amber, clear. Grapefruit, pinewoods, herbs on the nose. Sweet tropical fruit, medicinal notes very strong, herbs there too. Middle is floral, still very alcoholic. As is the finish. Cloyingly sweetish aftertaste of oranges and alcohol. Bah!

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
500ml bottle @Mad for Beer (Rome). Pours a light amber color, unclear, with a medium and persistent off-white head. Aroma of malt, grassy hops, pine and grapefruit. Flavour is balanced between malt and hops, medium sweet with a medium bitter end. Medium body, medium to light carbonation. Ok.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Fruit punching its way out of the glass (Lemon zest + Pineapple + Peach).
Body not as hoppy (malt lends a Bitter-esque balance) but a v bitter finish (in a good way) which makes the whole thing together as a bit better than just a big hop-smacking water-fest.
I’ll put it on record: I, for one, would happily go South-ville!
