iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Jul 29, 2009 On tap @ Falling Rock. Clear orange with a one finger off-white head, good retention. Citrus and pine up front with some slight B.O. hoppiness. Faint caramel malts. Flavoe has more orange citrus and more crystal malt presence. Dry finish with bitterness at a 5, slight alcohol. Light to medium body with light prickly carbonation. Pretty good IPA. alagnak (296), Littleton, Colorado, USA Jul 23, 2009 12ox btl bottled 1st week of June, according to the label. Aroma is dirty - some semi-rotten-vegetable smells and some urine-like sourness. Flavor is better - nothing unique, pretty standard light hop bitterness with a fair malt component to balance. Tastes OK, but the nose knocks this one out of the ’will buy again’ category for me. Dmalone102 (216), Denver, Colorado, USA Jul 18, 2009 Weird. I had the Edge City IPA a couple of years ago and it was great, but I really didn’t like the Compass IPA.
Aroma- Diacetyl, crystal malt. Low hop aroma.
Appearance- Orange - Amber in color, ok clarity decent head.
taste- Diacetyl, caramel... very malty, not a lot of hop flavor or bitterness to speak of.
Palate- Medium body, moderate carbonation.
Overall- What happened? The Edge City IPA that I had did not taste like that! I really love Bristol, so I will try again. scoth (267), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jul 12, 2009 Pours clear copper with a medium beige head, fine and lasting lacing. Very floral bouquet with fresh-cut grass, pine, and grapefruit, as well as some caramel and apple underneath. Medium bodied, dry. Pine, grapefruit, caramel flavors, with a fairly strong bitter, floral and grassy finish. msante79 (782), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Jun 28, 2009 Bomber. Pours copper with white head. Aroma is caramel malt, light hops and citrus. Flavor is caramel malt and faint hops and light citrus. Much better if you let it warm up a bit. This might me an old bottle as I am not getting an fresh hoppiness or big citrus flavor. It was in the cooler section so who knows. All this is now is a malty pale ale. VitaminR (422), Colorado, USA Jun 26, 2009 Citrusy pine nose, some floral notes. Cloudy dark amber with a small head. Slight toffee sweetness with a grassy bitter bite. Light carbonation, medium body, minty hoppy deep finish. Almost seems like a "real" ale without the freshness? Not a top choice, decent, but there are way too many IPAs out there to try that are much better, even the lesser ones. theisti (1640), Leawood, Kansas, USA May 26, 2009 12 oz bottle (labeled as Compass IPA), purchased at the liquor store next to the Safeway in Fountain, Colorado. This appeared to be best beer available at the shop, so I gave it a try. Pour is mostly clear copper orange with nice settling and a 1 1/2 inch white head. Nice splotchy lacing as the beer falls. Aroma of dank citrus and pine hops initially, quickly followed by nice toasted biscuit maltiness behind that. Nice balanced and fresh nose. Taste is fresh, dank, citrus orange, bright pine hoppiness balanced with the toasted biscuit malt. Nice balance between the sweet and the bitter. Palate is medium thin, medium carbonation - really drinkable. CaryTheDude (1113), Longmont, Colorado, USA May 2, 2009 Crushed at the Pumphouse Spring Beer Festival. Decent IPA. Some good bitter hops combined with some poopy malt in nose and flavor. Drinkable.
