kepano (239), Meudon, France Mar 11, 2008 Updated: Mar 12, 2008 Between sips of America’s Hall of Fame, I had to give my local brewers some palate-time. Enter Bristol’s Edge City series, an appreciated project riding shotgun to some of my standby local brews (I’d tip my hat to the Winter Warlock any day). This IPA pours an attractive Charentais melon hue, deeply translucid, like stained glass and topped of a nice white froth. Hops are obviously at the forefront, juicy and fruity – distinctly American. Grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine and hints of pine share the stage. Caramel and acacia honey lend offsetting malts. Hints of cedar, plum and lemon custard round the complexity of this jubilant nose. The flavor, surprisingly, is quite mild. A soft echo of honey constitutes the primary focus with subtle tonalities ringing erratically. Initial accents of spruce needles and cedar bark transition to a biscuity, burnt apricot mid-palate and finish with peach and pineapple. A sugary aspect competes with a hint of cheesy (Gouda-like) hop, but the excitement remains in this brew’s aroma. "Nice" is such an insipid adjective, but unfortunately Bristol’s Edge City IPA is just that: a nice beer. Not particularly exciting but eminently drinkable, with a tasty hop profile and a mild but genuine bitterness. (19/03/2007)
potbeercollege (254), Boulder, Colorado, USA Nov 8, 2009 Tasting at CBF. Nice clear golden color, medium white head. Aroma of citrus hops, specifically grapefruit. Taste is clean and crisp. Very bitter finish; almost no sweetness throughout. Its clear this beer is brewed with lots of hops. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 23, 2009 12oz bottle. Hazy with a drk golden hue. Off white ring of head. Grapefruit and fudge aromas with a hint of candy sugar. Medium bodied with a bitter palate. Nice bright grapefruit hop flavor. Dry finish. thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Sep 19, 2009 This draft brew from a motel on nitro poured a extremely large sized head of foamy finely sized off-white colored bubbles that were and left behind a uncarbonated dark orange colored body. The mild aroma was hoppy and floral. The thick flat flavor contained notes of mild hops. Not one that I would likely buy again as the nitro just kills it. mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Aug 21, 2009 bottle thanks to cavie. amber, cream head. nose is citrus and not much else. not bad on the palate but the flavor is straight forward with grapefruit. thirdeye11 (405), Texas, USA Aug 21, 2009 (12oz bottle thanks to Cavie) Pours a clear yellow-orange with oily head. Nose is grapefruit and hoppy. Taste is dominated by the bitterness and not sweet enough to match. The palette is oily slick and finishes much the same as the taste with tons of pine and grapefruit. Not bad, but not well done either. Headbanger (1574), Aurora, Illinois, USA Aug 10, 2009 12oz bottle 8/10/09 (Courtesy of RSRIZZO)-Pours a cloudy orangish amber iwth a small white ring for a head. Aroma of hops, citrus, and malt. Taste of the same with some more sweetness on the back end. This medium bodied brew is not bad but has a bit more malt than other IPA’s. Cavie (1317), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Aug 4, 2009 Clear orange. Some soured hops but not bad. Sour and dry hops. Not bad but the hop choice could have been better. natejgood (189), Denver, Colorado, USA Aug 2, 2009 Pours a dark golden color with a thin white head. The aroma is malty and sweet, which is usually not an expected aroma for an IPA. The flavor is also a bit malty/sweet, but with a noticeable hop component to balance out the other flavors. The beer is a little heavy in the mouth for an easy drinking IPA, but it’s still pretty tasty.
