3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
March 27th, 2011 - More than a few breweries lead their commercial dance on the equivalent of their left food, often an amber. But not so for Bristol Brewery. Compared to some of its other core brews, the Mass Transit Ale is a bit disappointing. A nice amber brown color with a hazy body and a head with strong lacing, it looks like a solid beer, and the tangerine and yeasty yogurty tanginess has a certain appeal. Even the sour cherry in the nose seems a sophistication that is out of most beer’s league. But the taste feels flat and two dimensional. It’s grainy, and seems to have dropped that dairy tang and sweetness somewhere. Instead, the flavor begins flat, featuring a more-dead-than-alive maltiness, and a long aftertaste of the same corpulent taste. With better beers being offered at the same time (in all likelihood) I’d skip the Mass Transit and move to some of the finer works coming out of Bristol Brewery, like their Laughing Lab or, when available, Winter Warlock.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sampled on 10/5/2012. This Amber Ale pours a medium orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity, caramel and sweet. A medium bodied amber. The malts are fruity, caramel and sweet. The hops are earthy. Decent carbonation.
Hate to say, it’s an amber alright, nothing less and definitely nothing more. On the positive side this beer does have some nice bready malts and a very nice slightly dry finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet

Pour is clear orange with white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, some slight soapy hops with a touch of grass, vanilla as well. Taste is a bit sweet, caramel and grainy malts up front, some vanilla, touch of grass, finishing fairly sweet but dry. Fizzy, watery and overcarbonated as well.
