COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our biggest beer by far, Old No. 23 revives an English farmhouse brewery tradition of making a strong ale to set aside for special occasions. Our version, while tedious and time-consuming to brew, rewards the connoisseur with an ale that has the depth and complexity of a good brandy or single malt scotch. Massive quantities of malt and hops, a long aging time and limited availability make this a special ale worthy of its reputation.

Pour is a dark hazed copper with red edges and tan thin head. Nose is fairy sweet with heavy malt component. A hint dusty and a faint green/herbal hop. Taste is strong berry, candied sugar, brown sugar, faint chocolate malt and a touch of toasted nut. Full bodied and solid carbonation, a bit chalky in the finish. Green hops and a light hop bitterness linger through the back end.

On tap at Freshcraft. Dark orange/amber appearance with minimal head and light lacing. Aroma and flavor of caramel, fruity esters, earthy hops, toffee and light alcohol. Medium sweetness and light bitterness. One of their better offerings.

12 ounce bottle. Not sure where it came from. Dark red brown and mostly clear. A beige layer of foam leaves some lacing. Dark fruit, rich malts, and some spices in the aroma. I read the ABV but donít taste alcohol. But by the 4th or 5th sip it could be felt. I do taste raisins, very sweet malts, and bright hops. Mid glass the fruit is bigger and some harshness arrives. This is a tasty sipper.

Medium/dark orange in color with a white head, this barleywine has a nice, malty nose and a sour complexity of pit fruits and maybe some bourbon and raisins. Itís neat, complex, and mature. This is why I love barleywines. Itís chewy, malty, and serious. Itís soft and smooth in the mouth, with a nice balance of alcohol and malts with a touch of earthy, resinous hops. I have to say that Iím more impressed by this beer than I thought I would be.

1999 bottle! Holy shit! Sweet aroma. A bit of maple. Smooth with a little oxidation. Held up really well for such an old beer. Nice.

Dark orange to copper with a thin tan head. Very sweet winey nose. Medium to full bodied, sweet raisin flavors followed closely by a dry hop bitter finish ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Im not sure what this is supposed to taste like but its not good. Smells and tastes a little like a run of the mill barleywine, just worse. Seriously undrinkable.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2014 2012 vintage, cellared about 1 year and 4 months. Sweet dark fruit aroma with caramel malt and just a bit of booze. Pours a cloudy, caramel colored with a thin white head and very little lacing. Starts with sweet caramel malt and finishes with nice dark fruit flavors and just a touch of booze. Full-bodied with a smooth, rich texture and a sticky finish that lingers in the aftertaste. Ages quite nicely. Probably could have used a little more time for the booziness to wear off, but still damn fine.
