hopscotch (4755), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Mar 19, 2008 Bottle… March 08 Tampa Bay Tasting… Pitch black with a small, creamy, off-white head. The nose is of freshly brewed coffee, restrained chocolate and smoke (subtle, but definitely there). Medium-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Smoky and sweet with mild bitterness and a chocolate undertone. Finishes mostly sweet with soft, minerally bitterness. Thanks to mgumby10 for sharing his bottle! acrdz (4535), Boulder, Colorado, USA Sep 27, 2008 Bottle, probably a little old, maybe six months. Solid dark brown body, some lighter hues on the sides of the glass but mostly opaque. Nose is muted, some sort of dry crackers and malted milk balls, some roast and chocolate but fairly light, lacking complexity and basically coming across as stale and washed out with age. Flavor is similar, but does have more of a sweetened amaretto and vanilla note, along with the distinct flavor of white chocolate. Astringency is noticed on the back, body is medium to light, and overall it comes across as stale, faded and weak. Without any glaring flaws, but still it seems just too faded. Smoke? Barely noticeable, but there, mostly on the back, mixed in with that dominant white chocolate flavor. This is definitely more of a porter with some smoke than a smoked porter. Ernest (4322), Boulder, Colorado, USA Feb 17, 2008 Bottle.
Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark brown to black
Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, caramel, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers), with a note of vanilla, light note of chalk, hint of ash.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation.
There’s certainly some roast here, but I really don’t get much if any smoke. Maybe a hint of ash, but don’t expect rich smoked malt here. A very pleasant porter nonetheless, if a tiny bit on the sweet side. jcwattsrugger (4272), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jun 8, 2008 @Hoboken#1-thanks beastiefan2k –pours a disappearing tan head and dark brown color. Aroma is sweet dark malt, smoke. Taste is sweet dark malt, faint smoke. Easy but somewhat thin. JoeMcPhee (4061), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Mar 16, 2008 Bottle shared by beastiefan2k. Dark brown beer, thin head. Aroma is lightly chocolatey, some light coffee. A soft earthy chocolatey character. Toasted base malts and a lightly nutty element as well. I don’t get any smoke at all, other than a kiss of saltiness to the roast.
