Opaque dark chestnut with samllish dark tan head. Sulfur and black malt aroma. Smooth feel. Sweet malt and coffee flavors. Somewhat sour bitter finish distracts slightly from the overall enjoyability.

Black pour with a dark tan head. Creamy and roasted malt nose, bitter chocolate and coffee. Nice full mouthfeel, creamy and smooth.Nice hop bite near the end. This is one of the best of the winter brews so far for this year. Thanks Ringo!
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Aubrey (3192) - Bellingham, Washington, USA - NOV 14, 2002
UPDATED: FEB 8, 2004 BLACK BEAUTY with a chocolatey brown head... lace patterns lingered so much, my dishwasher began to cry. Rich and chewy malt just made my mouth water uncontrollably. Wonderful amount of hops complement the sweet, roasty malts. What a F'n awesome stout! Some qualities in it are reminiscent of Shakespeare Stout -- without the smoke or heavy burnt flavors. Rerate: I think last year's was much "thicker" than this year's. I still think this year's is really good, but it's not as good as I remember it.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Ringo (963) - Loveland, Colorado, USA - NOV 14, 2002
A pleasant surprise. This is no oatmeal stout, I hate to tell the brewer that he doesn’t know what he made, but this is an Imperial stout (just a lower ABV one). Thick, silky, and slightly vinuous. Recommended.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ernest (5183) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 8, 2002
UPDATED: NOV 6, 2011 Bottle (2011 vintage). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black (not opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, roasted grain, husks), lightly hoppy (grapefruit). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Watery and simple.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 proc (342) - Dearborn, Michigan, USA - MAR 9, 2002
Pours to virtually no head. ’5’ on appearance as it is as dark as the night. Somewhat light, but has the distinctive taste that is so good in oatmeal stouts. Much thinner, flavor-wise when compared to a Samuel Smiths, but hey, who cares. Light, but tasty hops on the finish.

Impressively dark, but left a bitter aftertaste.

Very smooth but not as ’blunt’ as other dark beers. An impressive brew nonetheless.
4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 inthebuff99 (11) - Littleton, Colorado, USA - JUN 4, 2001
This seasonal ale is very pleasing. It has a smooth body to it. It is balanced by a milky but sweet aftertaste.
