Kevin (1917), Colorado, USA Mar 14, 2007 bottle. i’ve had this on tap recently too, i think the bottle comes across better right now. solid black pour grey head, chocolate, nose with notes of brownies, with a light coffee scent. enjoyable balanced flavor. sugary cocoa and vanilla flavor mix with the roast notes well. a bit of raisin in the finish with a nice fudge flavor. really enjoyable beer. nolankowal (850), Columbus, Ohio, USA Mar 13, 2007 Bottle. Black pour with a light tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. Light roasted malts come out in the flavor, chocolate and a bit of dark fruit. Medium body with a dry finish. Beaver (588), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Mar 6, 2007 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a frothy tan head that mostly diminishes and leaves a little lacing.
The aroma is sweet lactic chocolate, some coffee and some charcoal and vegetal notes.
The flavor is sweet chocolate, coffee, and some anise with a burnt bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full with low carbonation.
Overall a very nice winter stout. The burnt bitterness balances out the sweet notes nicely.
kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Feb 26, 2007 Updated: Mar 1, 200712 oz bottle via beerandblues2 (thanks!). Pours black with a large tan head. Love the burnt/roasted nose with subtle notes of chocolate & vanila. Taste starts semi-sweet, then the roasted barley kicks in, followed by a little chocolate & coffee that is nicely balanced by some earthy hops. A little salty and with some soy in the finish as well. A little smokiness is noted. The oats don’t come through until the aftertaste. Thin/medium body. Moderate carbonation. A sweet stout? Not tasting hardly any sweetness, i would say this is just a Stout, but a pretty good one. waolsen (1220), Littleton, Colorado, USA Feb 4, 2007 bottle. black with thin tan head. big sour malts, sugar, oak, suprising alcohol, coffee and chocolate in the aroma. smooth. oatmeal, chocolate. coffee grain in a bitter finish. nice brew from Bristol. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jan 19, 2007 Has a surprisingly "very smoky" aroma. A nice stout, slightly smoky, and w/out any coffee hints, Pleasant hop finish. Yummy. bgburdman9 (822), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 11, 2007 I thought this was shared by nolankowal. Aroma was almost all chocolatea nd not much else. Was sweet and maybe a little roasty. Also a little alcohol coming through. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 11, 2007 Bottle shared by bgburdman: Black with a tan head. Aroma, some oats, coffee, chocolate. Flavor, chocolate, coffee, a hint of oats, and some dried dark fruits as well. Not my favorite.
