I finally sneaked a few sips from a bottle before acquiring a full glass directly from the brewery. To my great surprise they were very different from one another. I’m not certain if adjustments were made to the batch on tap at Bristol or if the bottled version I tasted was accidentally exceptional, but the question will be easily answered. In appearance both held similar character: a deep hearty black crowned of a rapidly diminishing creamy cocoa head. The nose bore similarities in the warm wet straw odor and sweet coffee qualities but the primary chocolate aroma had a much darker tone out of the growler. The flavor only furthered this impression by delivering an overly dark bitter ending. I much preferred the sweet and rich milk chocolate profile found in the bottle but luckily the bitterness mellows out as this beer warms up. An interesting brew either way, monotone but distinct and a pleasure to drink during a cold winter day.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 8, 2009 Pours nearly black, minimal lacing - aroma is equal parts intense roast and strong chocolate sweetness, with a touch of vanilla and anise, even some faint notes of bourbon - creamy, medium bodied - fairly sweet up front, but this is quickly brushed aside by roast and bitterness - coffee, chocolate, tobacco, char - a little bit ashy in the finish - decent. agillespie81 (211), Denver, Colorado, USA

Taste - sweet malt front, roasted back, somewhat bitter finish;
Palate - slight crispness, great body, faint alcohol burn;
Overall - wonderful in all areas, doesn’t blend as well as it could, nice on a cold day. alagnak (415), Littleton, Colorado, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 25, 2009 Bottle. Marked 3rd week of November so pretty damn fresh (nov 24 today). Pretty beer... Deep, deep brown with a short tan head. Nice carbonation bubbles. Nose is heavy on the sweet oats, taste is spot on brown sugar oatmeal. Slight cherry flavors. Just touches of bitterness and roastiness to finish. Slight watery finish. This is good, but I wish it had a touch more roast or hop profile. potbeercollege (550), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Nov 12, 2009 Draught. Brown/black thin tan head. Typical oatmeal. To thin in texture for my likings. Aroma is oat, chocolate and light coffee. Flavor is mild and kind of sweet with oatmeal, chocolate, grapefruit, and coffee. TheEnemy (428), Chicago, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 7, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a rich dark brown with tan foamy head that leaves nice bits of lace around the glass. Aroma is nutty, malty, toasted grains with a hint of pine and fruity esters. Flavor is dry, pleasantly bitter, toasty, nutty, a little chocolaty, and surprisingly piny. Glides down with a smooth, fairly creamy palate.
I didn’t ever figure I’d like piny-hop flavor in a stout, but this is the second such stout I’ve had where it blends unusually well (the other being Rogue Chocolate Stout). Moderation appears to be the key. When done right -- and it is here -- it’s a nifty touch. Adam77 (420), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA
