I finally sneaked a few sips from a bottle before acquiring a full glass directly from the brewery. To my great surprise they were very different from one another. I’m not certain if adjustments were made to the batch on tap at Bristol or if the bottled version I tasted was accidentally exceptional, but the question will be easily answered. In appearance both held similar character: a deep hearty black crowned of a rapidly diminishing creamy cocoa head. The nose bore similarities in the warm wet straw odor and sweet coffee qualities but the primary chocolate aroma had a much darker tone out of the growler. The flavor only furthered this impression by delivering an overly dark bitter ending. I much preferred the sweet and rich milk chocolate profile found in the bottle but luckily the bitterness mellows out as this beer warms up. An interesting brew either way, monotone but distinct and a pleasure to drink during a cold winter day.

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 25, 2009 Bottle. Marked 3rd week of November so pretty damn fresh (nov 24 today). Pretty beer... Deep, deep brown with a short tan head. Nice carbonation bubbles. Nose is heavy on the sweet oats, taste is spot on brown sugar oatmeal. Slight cherry flavors. Just touches of bitterness and roastiness to finish. Slight watery finish. This is good, but I wish it had a touch more roast or hop profile. potbeercollege (335), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Nov 12, 2009 Draught. Brown/black thin tan head. Typical oatmeal. To thin in texture for my likings. Aroma is oat, chocolate and light coffee. Flavor is mild and kind of sweet with oatmeal, chocolate, grapefruit, and coffee. TheEnemy (422), Chicago, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 7, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a rich dark brown with tan foamy head that leaves nice bits of lace around the glass. Aroma is nutty, malty, toasted grains with a hint of pine and fruity esters. Flavor is dry, pleasantly bitter, toasty, nutty, a little chocolaty, and surprisingly piny. Glides down with a smooth, fairly creamy palate.
I didn’t ever figure I’d like piny-hop flavor in a stout, but this is the second such stout I’ve had where it blends unusually well (the other being Rogue Chocolate Stout). Moderation appears to be the key. When done right -- and it is here -- it’s a nifty touch. Adam77 (407), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 18, 2009 Aroma: Roasted malts and dried Fruits
Appearance: It ours black with a tan head,
Flavor: Roasted grains, bitter bite,
Mouth feel: It has a full body.
Overall Impression: I purchased this beer based on the recommendation of customer at the liquor store. I was looking for beers from breweries I had not had before. This beer fit the bill plus had a glowing recommendation. When all is said and done, it a good stout, but I don’t see my self purchasing it again. There is nothing wrong with the beer; there just is anything memorable about it.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 11, 2009 A freind of mine likes this so much he brought a few cases back from a trip to see family in Colorado. I think he picked it up straight from the brewery. Pours very dark with lots of floaties, a midsized tan head leaving plenty of lace. Aroma is very nice with a pronounced bourbon character, a little bit of chocolate and a mild rasin like aroma. Flavor is very nice, creamy and coffee like plenty of sweetness blanaced with a strong roasty character. Good fruity notes accompany a very earthy flavor. I like this very much. iowaherkeye (1852), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 1, 2009 12oz bottle from acrdz, thank you Mike. Bottled first week of November (hopefully ’08). Black with a small tan head, pretty decent retention. Aroma of milk chocolate and brown sugar with a roasty--not burnt--back end. Flavor is roastier with some light smoke and ashy notes, and even a tinge of salty soy and dark fruit. The finish is just a little burnt, semi-dry, with bitterness peaking around a 3 1/2. Low carbonation with a medium body, though just a hair thinner than I’d have liked. Overall not too bad, though no need to revisit.
