kepano (239), Meudon, France Dec 12, 2005 Updated: Nov 30, 2006 I’ve been meaning to get my hands on Winter Warlock because it’s one of the best offerings of my local brewer. I finally sneaked a few sips from a bottle before acquiring a full glass directly from the brewery. To my great surprise they were very different from one another. I’m not certain if adjustments were made to the batch on tap at Bristol or if the bottled version I tasted was accidentally exceptional, but the question will be easily answered. In appearance both held similar character: a deep hearty black crowned of a rapidly diminishing creamy cocoa head. The nose bore similarities in the warm wet straw odor and sweet coffee qualities but the primary chocolate aroma had a much darker tone out of the growler. The flavor only furthered this impression by delivering an overly dark bitter ending. I much preferred the sweet and rich milk chocolate profile found in the bottle but luckily the bitterness mellows out as this beer warms up. An interesting brew either way, monotone but distinct and a pleasure to drink during a cold winter day.
Adam77 (402), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA May 14, 2009 Poured black with tan head. Aroma of sweet malt. Good sweet malt flavor with chocolate and oatmeal hints. mrbirmingham (37), Kansas, USA Apr 18, 2009 Aroma: Roasted malts and dried Fruits
Appearance: It ours black with a tan head,
Flavor: Roasted grains, bitter bite,
Mouth feel: It has a full body.
Overall Impression: I purchased this beer based on the recommendation of customer at the liquor store. I was looking for beers from breweries I had not had before. This beer fit the bill plus had a glowing recommendation. When all is said and done, it a good stout, but I don’t see my self purchasing it again. There is nothing wrong with the beer; there just is anything memorable about it.
jbye4334 (313), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Apr 8, 2009 (bottle). Pours a black color. Medium size tan colored head with moderate lacing. Roasted malt and oatmeal aroma. Roasted malt taste. Smooth finish, with lasting malt taste. Soft carbonation. CanIHave4Beers (561), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Feb 11, 2009 A freind of mine likes this so much he brought a few cases back from a trip to see family in Colorado. I think he picked it up straight from the brewery. Pours very dark with lots of floaties, a midsized tan head leaving plenty of lace. Aroma is very nice with a pronounced bourbon character, a little bit of chocolate and a mild rasin like aroma. Flavor is very nice, creamy and coffee like plenty of sweetness blanaced with a strong roasty character. Good fruity notes accompany a very earthy flavor. I like this very much. iowaherkeye (1651), relocated to Santa Rosa f/Iowa, California, USA Feb 1, 2009 12oz bottle from acrdz, thank you Mike. Bottled first week of November (hopefully ’08). Black with a small tan head, pretty decent retention. Aroma of milk chocolate and brown sugar with a roasty--not burnt--back end. Flavor is roastier with some light smoke and ashy notes, and even a tinge of salty soy and dark fruit. The finish is just a little burnt, semi-dry, with bitterness peaking around a 3 1/2. Low carbonation with a medium body, though just a hair thinner than I’d have liked. Overall not too bad, though no need to revisit. VitaminR (376), Colorado, USA Jan 22, 2009 Smoky molasses and burnt caramel coffee. Black/brown color with a frothy deep tan head. Dark bittersweet chocolate sweetness with some burnt toast, nicely balanced. Silky medium to full body, mild carbonation, rich long lasting roasted coffee finish. Very good Stout. The oatmeal softens some of the tannins resulting in a well balanced and tasty brew ucusty (1664), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Dec 31, 2008 Thanks to Secret Santa for this! Black pour with one finger chestnut colored head a film of drippy lace. Oats and dark fruits on the nose. Medium bodied, creamy mouth feel. Chocolate, dark fruits, and roasted malts. Light bitterness and slightly dry. NachlamSie (1568), Tennessee, USA Dec 31, 2008 12 oz. from the first week of November sent to me by Acrdz. Thanks! This is a rather dark stout, I was surprised by its shade of black. Not much of a head forms. The aroma is vinous with hints at prunes, molasses, and chocolate. This seems to be rich and sweet. Oats are more noticeable in the flavor and this has a pleasantly meaty body to it. Dark fruits float around my palate and hints are made at licorice, earth, and chocolate before finally residing on a nutty, woody finish. This is a treat!
