COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, rare treat. An epic labor of love that will change your notion of what beer can be. Brewed with maple syrup and honey, and aged for three years, its warm toffee notes and round mellow tone are purely stunning. Like candy for the soul.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2014 Bottle: Brewed in í03 & bottled in í06. Thanks, Jeff! Deep brown body with literally no head - only a few small carbonation bubbles. Looks like Utopias but thinner. Aroma has lots of brown sugar, molasses, wet oak, very faint maple syrup notes, lots of vanilla candy in the finish, & slight signs of oxidation. Taste is pretty sweet with molasses, brown sugar, & big-time toffee up front. Again, light oxidation in the form of boozy sherry, only a very mild hint of staleness. Cocoa powder, vanilla, either maple or butterscotch... Hard to pinpoint exactly. Lots of dark fruit in the finish. Guys we were with suggested it finishes like a Port, & it absolutely does... Slightly boozy with a big, dark currant & fruity sweetness. Good stuff... BIG stuff, but doesnít seem like 18%+.

Bottle, courtesy of Ratman197 (Thanks!). Brewed 25/9/2003, Bottled 9/5/2006. It pours like coke with a fizzy and frothy beige head, that quickly disappears. Aroma is vinous, sherry, sweet dried fruits, bourbon, chocolate, alcohol. Taste is light cardboard, bitter chocolate, dried fruits, sweet alcohol with a warming finish.

Brewed 25/9/2003, Bottled 9/5/2006 Pours not as dark as expected. Foams like coke, very quick and then dissapears. Smells sweet with influence of dried fruits. Tastes good, ends with raisins and other dried fruits.

Bottle: Thanks Madmitch: Served in a Chouffe glass: Brewed 2003/Bottled 2006: Brown pour. Very small lively and fairly quick changing/disappearing beige foamy head on top of a black colored beer. Aromas of vinous notes with liquorice, raisin, pepper, chalk, toffee, mocha, dried prunes, figs, hints of soya, brown sugars and sticky barley roast. Flavours of spices, roast, wood, chalk, ginger bread, port, toffee, raisin, dried prunes, coal, liquor, pepper, liquorice wood, some yeast, sweet barley malt roast, some bitters, some malts, some chocolate, some berries, light sticky sweet tar tones and hints of honey roast... Complex! Aftertaste is quite lingering mix of spices/pepper, raisin, toffee, wood, light sticky, some coal and chalk. Very interesting peppery tone! Low carbo, soft creamy yet spicy mouthfeel, full body and a creamy texture. Alcohol is well hidden! Nice beer for sure! Spicy but not alcoholic, tasty but nothing unbalanced. Interesting, strong, complex and some new flavours to discover.

ineedbeer (547) - Oakland, California, USA - JAN 12, 2013
2003 brew date with a 2006 bottling date; this has gone past it's prime. Aroma has quite a bit of alcohol still, but behind that alcohol is notes of soy sauce, cardboard and sherry. There is also a teriyaki beef jerky note to the aroma. There is a hint of a fruity, dark berry note. Lots of alcohol. Pours a very still dark brown, not quite black with no head. Huge legs to this one. Flavor has quite a bit of alcohol, but also huge smoked, barbecue meat notes. Low to moderate bitterness. Some chocolate and coffee notes, but secondary to the alcohol and meat. Obviously no hop flavor. A bit of soy sauce, but the oxidation isn't as bad as in the flavor. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied; it's not as thick as one would expect a beer this large to be. Absolutely no carbonation. Lots of alcohol warmth. Overall this beer is well past it's prime, but has held up better than many other beers would have. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle at Paulís for the Blind Stout tasting. Pours a clear caramel brown to black with no head to speak of. Big caramel and toast, sweet oxidization. Loads of old malt, sweet caramel. Way sweet, cloying at times, old roast and oxidization, big and boozy. Long boozy finish with a ton of old oxidized caramel.

Pour thanks to motortoddhead. Unfortunately, just past prime. 2003 brew date with 2006 bottling date. Pitch black with no head. Aroma rather pleasant with soft cocoa/chocolate roast, dark fruit, and booze. Flavor straight soy sauce and cardboard. Syrupy body. Oxidation has taken itís toll.
