Commercial Description:
A rich, rare treat. An epic labor of love that will change your notion of what beer can be. Brewed with maple syrup and honey, and aged for three years, its warm toffee notes and round mellow tone are purely stunning. Like candy for the soul.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. If you take the perfection of a Sam Adams Triple Bock (see my entry on this for details), and add proper beer carbonation, you get the XXX War. The version this year is 19.2% ABV. This is a beer condensate. Incredible mouth explosion of thick sensations firing all your taste buds. What I really love about this beer is the mellowed soy sauce emerging from the jello-thick sweet malt backbone. Has just enough etoh to get you into the coven.

It burrnnnsss usss! Nasty, prickly, beers. Not to be trusted, my precious. Honestly I did get lots of complex flavors as noted by others - dark rum, prunes, alcohol, wood, chocolate, alcohol, maple, and maybe some more alcohol. I appreciated the experience and might even try again.

Bottle shared by acrdz at BCTC. Thanks Mike! Nose of heavy chocolate, toffee, alcohol and syrup, and some more alcohol. Flavor is similar with an emphasis on the heat. Pretty good beer, don’t think I could drink a whole bottle.

12oz bottle. Dark reddish brown colored body, with a small, quickly-dying brown head. Hugely boozy hot nose of licorice, plum liqueur, chocolate cream, some sugary fruity and of course, an abundance of alcohol. Medium to light body, thin up front, more oily in the back... heavy resemblance to a licorice, chocolate and plum liqueur, super-sweet and almost gross at times, but I actually like it much more than Mikkeller Black or Mikkeller BA X Imperial Stout... some dry cocoa at the end is one of the few redeeming qualities, but overall it’s not as bad as I was expecting.

12oz bottle, courtesy of acrdz, post-BCTC festivities. Thanks, Mike! A nice small beer to finish things up. Pour a very dark, oily, reddish-brown color; light tan head with patchy lacing. Huge amounts of nougat, dried fruits, and caramel in the aroma; dense, oily nose. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy nougats, brown sugar, and oily maltiness; some warm alcohol coming through; intensely sweet, boozy, and malty overall; dense, generous, slightly messy stuff; lots of brown sugar. Lengthy finish: lots of dried dark fruits, caramel, and intense, chewy maltiness. Huge, but reasonably restrained.

Huge thanks to tpd975 for opening this rare gem. Pours dark darkness with thin dark brown that quickly vanished. The aroma is inviting with caramel, vanilla and rich ripe dark fruity esters of sweet Concord grape jam, plums and ripe cherries. A bigger draw begins to pick up the alcohol heat. The mouth feel is chewy fudgy slushy and sludgy sugar sticky sugar malts. I get notes from the nose showing up in the flavor such as vanilla, caramel, molasses, toffee along with faint notes of dark chocolate. The taste does have a solid alcohol warming sensation but well within reason for the gynormous ABV. This was very nice.
