COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, rare treat. An epic labor of love that will change your notion of what beer can be. Brewed with maple syrup and honey, and aged for three years, its warm toffee notes and round mellow tone are purely stunning. Like candy for the soul.

reign of pain brought down by rustychiles. brewed 9/25/03 and bottled 6/9/06...

smells like a bag of dry dog food, chewing tobacco, molasses, umami and wood. not a bad smell if you don’t already know what it is going to taste like. (the phx crew has a habit of bringing painful beers to tastings... i’m looking at you, dave. mr chug-a-lug-a sam adams triple blackout bock).

the flavor is as expected... hellfire, alcohol burn, tobacco juice, molasses and wood. hot, salty and sweet are some of my favorite descriptors... just not in beer! the mouth feel is... well, it’s pretty much near impossible to choke this one down... 6/3/3/1/11/2.4

2003 brew date with a 2006 bottling date; this has gone past it's prime. Aroma has quite a bit of alcohol still, but behind that alcohol is notes of soy sauce, cardboard and sherry. There is also a teriyaki beef jerky note to the aroma. There is a hint of a fruity, dark berry note. Lots of alcohol. Pours a very still dark brown, not quite black with no head. Huge legs to this one. Flavor has quite a bit of alcohol, but also huge smoked, barbecue meat notes. Low to moderate bitterness. Some chocolate and coffee notes, but secondary to the alcohol and meat. Obviously no hop flavor. A bit of soy sauce, but the oxidation isn't as bad as in the flavor. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied; it's not as thick as one would expect a beer this large to be. Absolutely no carbonation. Lots of alcohol warmth. Overall this beer is well past it's prime, but has held up better than many other beers would have. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle at Paul’s for the Blind Stout tasting. Pours a clear caramel brown to black with no head to speak of. Big caramel and toast, sweet oxidization. Loads of old malt, sweet caramel. Way sweet, cloying at times, old roast and oxidization, big and boozy. Long boozy finish with a ton of old oxidized caramel.

Pour thanks to motortoddhead. Unfortunately, just past prime. 2003 brew date with 2006 bottling date. Pitch black with no head. Aroma rather pleasant with soft cocoa/chocolate roast, dark fruit, and booze. Flavor straight soy sauce and cardboard. Syrupy body. Oxidation has taken it’s toll.

Very sweet and boozy aroma. Tons of honey, brown sugar and dark fruits. A touch of chocolate. Pours dark brown with no head at all. Roast, honey, caramel, more honey, maple syrup, a shit ton of booze. Rather carbonated, ridiculously hot. Would rather have a shot for all intents and purposes.

12 oz. bottle shared by dbsdelight- thanks, Dan! Brewed 9/25/03, bottled 6/9/06. The numbers on this bottle are downright frightening. Pours a deep copper-hued earthy brown with no head or carbonation. Aroma of dark fruits, brandy, licorice, peat, caramel, berries, tannins, and molasses. Some oxidation, but not significant. Flavor of peat, roasted malts, earth, berries, syrup, brandy, molasses, and some hint of smoke. Warming alcohol for sure on the initial and end. Big-bodied, with low carbonation and a smooth, syrupy mouthfeel. Messy and crazy but I liked its go-for-broke strangeness. I also liked the face my wife made when she tried it.

Opaque black beer. Not a lot of carbonation. Chocolate and marmite nose. Light semi dry palate. Taste follows the nose but adds some rich porty tones and some dried fruits. Dry and warming finish with some aniseed and marmite. Nice beer but not the knockout I was hoping for.

Sampled at the richmond beer dig 2011. Bourbon smooth rich soysauce. Tasty. Cool label.
