COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, rare treat. An epic labor of love that will change your notion of what beer can be. Brewed with maple syrup and honey, and aged for three years, its warm toffee notes and round mellow tone are purely stunning. Like candy for the soul.

Draught at brewery. Pours opaque with a spare fizzy dark brown head, completely diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (molasses, caramel), average hops (perfume), average yeast (dough, leather) with notes of prune and port. Full bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation and a smooth finish. Long duration, heavy sweetness (without cloying) and acidity, moderate bitterness; silky smooth molasses and brown sugar, well balanced, alcohol is noticeable but not offensive.

Pour thanks to motortoddhead. Unfortunately, just past prime. 2003 brew date with 2006 bottling date. Pitch black with no head. Aroma rather pleasant with soft cocoa/chocolate roast, dark fruit, and booze. Flavor straight soy sauce and cardboard. Syrupy body. Oxidation has taken it’s toll.

Very sweet and boozy aroma. Tons of honey, brown sugar and dark fruits. A touch of chocolate. Pours dark brown with no head at all. Roast, honey, caramel, more honey, maple syrup, a shit ton of booze. Rather carbonated, ridiculously hot. Would rather have a shot for all intents and purposes.

Bottle shared by dbsdelight. Thanks Dan!. Pours dark with little to no head and very little carbonation. Aroma is dark fruits, sweet alcohol, molasses and chocolate. Flavor is roasted malts, chocolate and dark fruits. Full bodied with little to no carbonation.

12 oz. bottle shared by dbsdelight- thanks, Dan! Brewed 9/25/03, bottled 6/9/06. The numbers on this bottle are downright frightening. Pours a deep copper-hued earthy brown with no head or carbonation. Aroma of dark fruits, brandy, licorice, peat, caramel, berries, tannins, and molasses. Some oxidation, but not significant. Flavor of peat, roasted malts, earth, berries, syrup, brandy, molasses, and some hint of smoke. Warming alcohol for sure on the initial and end. Big-bodied, with low carbonation and a smooth, syrupy mouthfeel. Messy and crazy but I liked its go-for-broke strangeness. I also liked the face my wife made when she tried it.

Opaque black beer. Not a lot of carbonation. Chocolate and marmite nose. Light semi dry palate. Taste follows the nose but adds some rich porty tones and some dried fruits. Dry and warming finish with some aniseed and marmite. Nice beer but not the knockout I was hoping for.

12 oz. bottle. Served at cellar temperature. Pours an initially thick, but rapidly collapsing beige head, over a clear, black (SRM 40) body....nose is dried fruits (cherry, raisin, plum) soy sauce, yeast, beef, Bovril....taste is sweet dried fruits, yeast, beef, caramel/toffee, molasses, finishing with a dusty light bitterness.....mouth feel is light, but sticky, alcohol heat lingers, carbonation low. This is a big, rich, complex, sweet creation. It is a bit too hot from the alcohol, but is a nice attempt. Both the maple syrup and honey are completely gone to my palate except for their sweetness. The individual bottles in a beer of this age will vary greatly. Some great, some will not be. This explains the wide range of opinion on this beer. BJCP 8/3/15/4/7

This double imperial stout was just a little too strong for my tastes. The flavor was mostly masked by the harsh alcohol taste. I love the winter warlock, but the XXX not so much. I’d rather have three winter warlocks then one XXX.

12oz bottle, brewed 9/25/03, bottled 6/9/06. Poured surprisingly light.. like watered down cola, with a head that fizzed away mighty quickly.. looked still in the glass. My first impression of the aroma was warm and sweet.. next came brandy sugars, maple syrup, and a little bit of molasses.. a deeper breath showed a hefty dose of cardboardey oxidation.. another hit of maple syrup on the back. The flavor opened with sharp, peppery alcohol heat riding maple syrup flavor and thickness.. more maple syrup and honey at the core, along with dry English toffee and brandy-like sugars.. some sharp bitterness and tacky warmth surrounded.. big oxidation on the back and through the finish made it nearly undrinkable.. more syrupy maple and boozage on the long, sticky finish. Heavy-bodied with very low carbonation on the palate.. hot and oxidized.. this was a mess.
