Glouglouburp (1872), Montreal, Quebec, Canada May 20, 2008 In short: A “cask-style” ESB. Authentic British feeling. Wonderfully refreshing.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Cloudy dark orange body with a medium off-white head
In long: Very soft body and even softer carbonation. Lightly caramelized malts, some tree bark and dry leaves, It felt so much like a cask beer that I even asked if it was from a cask (they have two cask pumps there) but no this was from the tap. Ok then, that extra-soft carbonation was extremely appropriate for the style. Quite fruity too with citrus fruits, red apples, berries, and more but no individual fruit flavour standing out. This is about as good as an ESB can get. All they need to do to make it truly authentic English ESB is to serve it on cask and accompany it with very bad food.
cdeaton (66), Madison, Indiana, USA May 15, 2008 Not strong enough to be an ESB. Orange/copper, fairly clear. Light-bodied for a bitter. That said, good sweetness, good earthiness. Not bad. krautdog (15), Ohio, USA Apr 8, 2008 I had this on tap at the brewpub, served in an imperial pint glass. It was very drinkable, a solid ESB in the British style.
Gregis (848), Overland Park, Kansas, USA Oct 18, 2007 Sampler draft at the brewpub. Pours a deep iced tea brown with a creamy beige head that reduces to a lasting thin skin. Nice creamy lacing. The aroma is of nutty malt and lightly fruity hops. Light-bodied and slick with a tight, hoppy, bitter finish. Lightly nutty malt with a faint caramel backing and a fruity hop conclusion. A very solid ESB, and one of my favorites of the evening. 10/14/07 kp (6000), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2007 Date: 07/21/2007
