Cask at the brewpub. The pour appears more brown with a creamy khaki head. Really nice Fruit Stripe nose. There’s a stout type roastyness with a porter chocolate finish. Citric hops cut through in the end. Quite full bodied though. Too much so to think of this as an IPA. Still very good.

Draft at Broad Ripple. Poured a clear dark brown ruby color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting and had good lacing. Good earthy and toasted malt aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex good brew.

Indy Brewers Fest 2009 - firkin tent - Aroma is black licorice, roasted dark malts and chewy citrus hops. Flavor matches but is a little weaker. Palate is smooth and ashy. A real tasty brew.

IBGF 2009, Firkin tent: Muddy brown with a small frothy off-white head and some lace. The aroma has notes of tobacco, earthy yeast esters, roasty and ashy malts, grapefruit and mango hop esters. The taste is very fruity at first with a lovely balancing layer of sweet and dark malts. Mildly astringent and ashy upon the finish with a hint of espresso and hop spice characteristics. The mouth feel is smooth and quite refreshing despite the ashy and a bit metallic finish. Mikey Likey this a lot, I wish more brewers would attempt these Black IPA’s. I have not found one I disliked so far.
