Broadhead’s Grindstone Amber is a tenacious and tasty, rich-coloured amber ale that is hell-bent on hitting the spot. Bolstered by just the right balance of base malts, and finished with a strong but sweet sharpness, Grindstone is not for the laid-back beer drinker.

Scent of roasted malt, caramel, and biscuit. Clear golden colour. Earthy flavours: Slight bitterness with flavour of malt and caramel. Medium body with mild carbonation. Nice, but not particularly noticeable.

Pours a clean rich amber colour with a frothy warm cap, decent retention and lacing. Typical amber aroma with roasted malts, caramel, malts, grain and hops. The caramel does show a little more than most amber ales after breathing. It also shows up in the taste. Grainy finish with the mild hop lingering. Medium-bodied, so just a plain refreshing amber ale.

473 ml can from LCBO served cool in a tulip glass. Clear reddish-amber with a small, light tan head. Very grainy with some caramel and toasted malt, bread crust, melanoidin, crunchy. Medium body and carbonation. Similar to the nose with plenty of grainy, crunchy malt, toffee, slightly roasted, melanoidin; dry with fair bitterness and a dry malty finish. Not bad.

On tap at the Victory Cafe. Brown with a skim cap & serious lacing. On the boring side of things, which is disappointing considering the interesting lineup at this bar. . Drinking this at the bar while listening to the two guys from Spearhead drone on & on about how innovative their brewery is. Yeah ok get over yourself.

[5778-20130913] Tap. Doughy cereal grains aroma. Clear, light orange red body with a medium-lasting creamy white head. Grainy cereal flavour has a bitter base. Medium body. Good. (7/3+/7/3/14) 3.4

Very long lasting head. Still clingy and foamy after finishing the Backbone. Nutty malty scent. Nutty and bitter. A bit warming. It’s okay but not great.

On tap at the ’Smoke Shack’ in Ottawa - a reddish ale with a frothy head that dissipated with an aroma of see malts. Rated of malty bitterness, some sweetness and a hoppy balance. Kinda nice I thought.

Tap at C’est What Festival of Small Breweries. Pale amber colour - the aroma is softly sweet with some definite diacetyl. A bit of DMS and a fairly non-descript bitterness. Pretty crap. Watery palate as well

2013-09-13. Crisp golden amber body with a small off-white head. 3+ Aroma is mild, cereally pale malt. Flavour is mild, lightly grainy cereal pale malt, moderate bitterness throughout lingers in the finish. Smooth average bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Okay.
