4oz. sample @ Churchkey, DC. 8.0% abv. labeled as Sherlock Homes imp Stout in BB Barrel. I hope this is the version Churchkey got, as the regular Holmes is @ 3.9%. dark brown, tan head. aroma, what a let down, got a bunch of burnt liquor, hinting at barrel sourness, roasted malts, lots of booze coming through. flavors, again, this one is loaded with booze, hints of sour for the style, especially a bourbon, seems like it needs to settle some. Finish keeps a lot of liquorish/anise like notes, barrel covers most of the beer elements, from fruits to caramel malts. Barrel definitely needs to mellow out.

Draft. Pours a black body with an off white head and great retention, nice cascading body as well. Malty body with a light roast y bitterness, licorice and irish cream. Unfortunately i picked up a strong plastic note that ruined the rest of the beer for me.

Pours a pitch black color with a medium, light brown head. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, chocolate and mild roasted malt. The flavor is very sweet, there’s vanilla, chocolate, bourbon and mild roasted malt. The body is light to medium with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation.

Tap at the brewpub. BA Impy, 7.5% on the menu. Beautiful pour, pitch black with the definition of creamy mocha head. The rest was a complete mess. The aroma was way off, some vanilla, a lot of oak, burnt toast. Taste was were the sh*t hit the fan. Liquid oak, rotten vanilla and grain was all there was. Sweet, sticky and nauseating. Palate was thin and the lingering aftertaste had me begging for water. Did someone forget this one in the barrel?

In short: A typical big Bourbon Barrel Aged impy stout with a light undesired sourness. Moderately enjoyable
How: Tap at Chambly Beer Festival 2009
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head
In long: Nose is very boubonny with pleasant roasted coffee notes. I enjoyed the big body, especially since very Bourbon Barrel Aged impy stout tend to come out thinner but the carbonation was a bit too soft, again another typical BBA side-effect. Taste is chocolate cake, bourbon barrel, some vanilla, warming alcohol and (that’s where it looses points) a light sourness. Decent brew, no more. I can deal with strong bourbon barrel notes and vanilla in a BBA impy stout but when I get an oaky sourness then I conclude that the BBA was either overdone or not properly done. Elementary my dear Broadway.

A deep dark stout with a thin dark moka head. In aroma, a superb chocolate, bourbon barrel, vinous notes, and cherry wood. In mouth, a bitter chocolate with sour cherry, vanilla, wooden notes, warming alcohol. Very nice. On tap at Fête Bieres et Saveurs, Sept. 4 2009.
