3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 jerc (5580) - Toronto, - JUN 3, 2008
2008-05-30. Brown body with a modest beige head. Moderate fruity yeasty aroma,is both pleasant and not. Touch of diacetyl (?), fruit is the lingering impression. Similar flavour, muddled malts and fruit notes, cassis like? Light touch of caramel or brown sugar and sweet malt. Alcohol is not noticable, I am surprised it is as high as it is. (6+) Average palate. Meh, okay. On tap, Mondial, Montreal, 2T<P>"My dear, never confuse efficiency with a liver complaint. - Mary Poppins

In short: A dry toasted nutty brown ale. Just ok.
How: Tap at Vices & Versa, Montreal (simply called Imperial Brown Ale)
The look: Clear bronze body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Light nose of toasted crusty bread and a bit of caramel. Taste of dry toasted croutons, toasted dry nuts, some caramel, some old dried-up honey, earth. I like dry beers but this one was a tad too focus on dry crunchy stuff. Malt bill was like dried toasted malt husks and the beer was a bit too astringent for my liking. The name does bring back memories of my childhood. Back then I thought being 40 year old was very old and depressing. I was a pretty smart kid.

On tap at Vice et Versa. Pours a clear ruby brown with a medium sized white head which sticks around for a long time. Faintly hoppy at the start, soft caramel notes and toasty nutty malt. Big nutty malt flavors right away, lots of toast. Smooth with toasty malt and caramel notes. Long finish with more nutty malt and toast bitterness.

Sample at Vice et versa in Montreal. Pours a medium brown with decent head. Aroma is lightly malty but little else. Taste is surprisingly thin for a 7% beer, little going on here to form a lasting impression. Meh.

Called Mary Poppins Extra Old Stock Imperial Brown Ale, but same alcohol level. A nice dark brown ale with a thin light moka head. In aroma, a very floral pungeant hops aroma, vinous notes, porto, very beautiful. In mouth, a nice oily malt, almost like a barley wine, with musky notes, like an aged beer should be. Quite good. On tap at brewery, August 3, 2008.

[1404-20080530] Tap. Bread yeast and clean grainy dough aroma. Clear, dark amber brown body. Medium foamy light tan head. Medium boozy caramel and simple grainy yeast flavour is clean and has notes of wood and vanilla and toasted molasses. Medium body. Perfect in its simplicity, but mostly boring (unlike its namesake who was perfect in Practically every way).
