My Bottom Line:
Cloves, nutmeg and flowers meet banana esters in this chewy and cohesive spiced Weizenbock.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is plenty of lacing to decorate around the cloudy golden.
-Yeast character is very present from nose to finish; its phenols work admirably with the spices.
-The nose might be a tad aggressive for my tastes; there’s almost too much going on.
-The fruity spiciness in the finish is harmonious with the rest of the flavor profile.
-The full and cuddly mouthfeel remains soft even though this is a strong brew abv-wise.
-This really doesn’t feel like 8,8%.

On tap at the brewpub.

Aroma of lemon and grain with notes, has a nice foggy yellow body with decent head. Flavour is a nice hop and wheat mix working very well together. It has a very dry finish, and a refreshing wheat aftertaste. This is a great wit.

On tap at Brouhaha, cloudy honey gold hue, with a thick white head, yeasty, fruity citrusy, herbal spicy nose of thym, rosemary even a whiff of dill pickle, with some faint honeyed pale, wheat notes, and some hints of coriander, curaçao in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a warmth, yeasty, fruity, doughy, spicy character of faint thym, rosemary, lavender when the beer gets warmer, and some honeyish pale, wheat malt mellowness, within an orange peel, curaçao sweetness, leading towards a warming, fruity, citrusy, lemon peel spicy finish, for this kind of imperial belgian white ale.

Sampled on tap April 2010 @ ChurchKey, Washington DC
This beer has a hazy gold color to it and it is topped by a wispy, pale head. There is a big, spicy, up front aroma to this beer; notes of rose, orange up front, but there is an earthy, herbal note here too that is maybe not actual coriander, but certainly reminds me of that spicy. At times this beer can smell quite floral. A backdrop of cracker-like wheat, some grassy grain notes as well as a soft raw wheat character. This also smells lightly tart, which adds a bit of a round quality to the nose.

There is a sharp carbonic bite to this beer as it first hits my tongue. There is an herbal, rose-petal spiciness that makes me think of potpourri. There is actually quite a bit of orange flavor in this beer, but at times I find it hard to notice over the rose flavors; I suspect this is because I know roses were used in this beer, but at times that orange character just hits me full on. The carbonation produces a spiciness here as does the fermentation character; peppery notes as well as a young ginger flavor are noticeable. This has a fullish body, though it is light for a beer of this strength. The finish is spicy and some noticeable alcohol can make it seem a bit hot at times.

This is a very interesting beer; not bad, even enjoyable, but I don’t know that I really like it. In the end it is fairly complex, though a more subtle rose and orange character might have made this a bit better.

(Rating #2911)
