COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Introduced as: "Brøckhouse Brygmesterens Bryg nr. 9" at The Copenhagen Beer Festival 2007

English: Brøckhouse Draupnir is a clear and light golden top fermented beer with a dense white head. It is brewed with pale, ale, Münchner and wheat malt which give a fresh and light beer with a smooth malt sweetness. The beer is moderately hopped with the English Challenger and spiced with honey, pine needles and sloe. The honey contributes to the light sweetness and together with the sloe gives the English ale yeast a pleasant fruit like aroma. The pine needles balances the sweetness with a distinct bitterness which makes up for the modest dose of bittering hops. Brøckhouse has not tried to copy the beer the vikings drank, but has brewed a modern viking beer with inspiration from the ingredients used in the viking era. This includes pine needles, honey and sloe. IT fits most Danish summer dishes from the grill or salat bar. Should be served at 8-10 degrees celsius.

A beer must not taste and smell of a mixture of barbeque and honey, maybe ok in small glass for a Viking festival but not in 0.5 L bottles.

Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.

Bottle from Star Grocery, Berkeley. Pours murky copper with a rich beige head and an herbal aroma. There is a somewhat sweet complex flavor that includes fruit, spices, honey and a hint of pine. This is a very unusual brew that is, nevertheless, a compelling drink.

Has an almost mud brown color to it as well as sediment in the appearance. The aroma has a hard to place sweet/nutty aroma to it. The flavor is minty and slightly syrupy from the honey. A unique and good ale, although not very accessible to have on regular basis.

31-Jan-10 (500-ml bottle: Purchased 22-Dec-09 for $10.99 at www.wineandcheeseplace.com) The honey-sweet palate offers flavors of spruce, berries and flowers with a delicate, floral hop character throughout and a wheat malt finish. The scent of fresh pine needles is very prominent in the nose, while a sweet floral fragrance and some background wheatiness complement nicely. Medium-strong carbonation and a very creamy mouthfeel, but the medium-full bodied beer is sweet with little bitterness, so it can be a bit cloying at times. Hazy to cloudy in appearance, depending on how close to the bottom of the bottle the pour is. The inch-tall head is off-white in color and settles to a thin ring. Very different and quite enjoyable.

500 mL bottle from Grape & Gourmet in Virginia Beach, VA, opened 10/5/10. Pours a hazy copper color with lots of floating particles Large fizzy offwhite head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of raisins, spices and toffee with a mildly tart finish and a bit of juniper. The taste is bread, toffee, cherries, spices, pine, stone fruits. Medium bodied. Effervescent. About a year old at least and has held up well.

Random oddball beer I saw on the shelves, couldn’t resist picking it up. Kind of a dark orange body, head sticks around rather well. Some citric tanginess in the nose, not sure if that comes from hops or the sloe berries, I’m leaning toward the latter, as it does smell a little jammy/marmalade-ish. With its use of non-standard ingredients, this beer sounds a little wild and crazy, but it’s actually a bit of a subdued easy drinker. Mild pine-y and wildflower honey flavors marry with that slight jammy berry; the backdrop is a simple caramel malt profile. As it warms, it begins to take on what I would describe as birch beer and cherry soda flavors, albeit with only minor sweetness, as this beer is dry-ish. Not bad, would be an interesting beer with which to play around with food pairings.
