3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 rondphoto (613) - Lakeside Park, Kentucky, USA - SEP 10, 2011

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 wlajwl (1789) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - JUN 8, 2011
In appearance it almost looks like a doppelbock while the aroma is heavy on the mint. The taste is mint up front while there’s a maltiness similar to a barley-wine as well. Not bad really but considering I’m not a barley-wine fan, this doesn’t get as high of rating as someone who is a fan of barley-wines would rate it as.

Bottle from Star Grocery. Pours copper with a greenish tinge and a thin beige head. There is a medicinal toffee aroma and a nutty caramel malt flavor that is a bit thin with an herbal hint.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 brigg (416) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 22, 2011
(bottle) A bubbling chestnut brown body with a thin beige head. A sweet aroma with notes of ginger and lemon; musty. The flavor has some sweetness up front but quickly dries out, leaving a mildly bitter, very dry aftertaste. Notes of anise and ginger in the flavor. There is also the spiciness (nutmeg, allspice), but not too much else. As I said before, the finish is dry but also thin, almost watery (as if the flavor disappears), though the mouthfeel is carbonated. Not so bad in the universe of beers, but should be more for the style.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DarkElf (2961) - La Jolla, California, USA - JAN 13, 2011
31-Jan-10 (500-ml bottle: Purchased 22-Dec-09 for $10.99 at www.wineandcheeseplace.com) Compared side-by-side with their Draupnir, this beer is noticeably darker and sweeter with less emphasis on the sprucy pine. The nose is sweet and sugary, piney, sprucy, with flowers, mint and other sweet herbs, brown sugar, wheat bread, cereal, mince meat cookies, fruitcake, and a hint of citrus. The first few sips are very tasty and enjoyable, but after a few more sips, the sugary sweetness really builds on the palate and the enjoyment factor decreases significantly. Very spicy and herbal with some toasty and bready malts residing in the background, peaking out mostly in the brown sugar finish. A flurry of lightly bitter pine emerges occasionally to partially balance out the sweetness, but in general, this beer remains very sugary sweet and tough to drink in quantity. The body is medium with a fair amount of residual sugar adding additional weight. Carbonation is medium. Very hazy, medium brown in color with a fizzy, off-white head that recedes from half an inch to a thin ring fairly quickly. A very interesting beer overall, as are most beers inspired by traditional recipes, but the finished product here is a bit too sweet, and a few ounces more than suffices.
