4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Hermod (2205) - Vantaa, FINLAND - MAY 17, 2013
33cl bottle. Poured dark dark brown with a dense, huge white head. Aroma has loads of tropical fruitiness, floral hoppy. Very inviting. Roasted malt more in the back. Flavor has roastedness, grapefruit, salt and chocolate notes.Heavy bitter, dry finish. This is a black IPA for sure, good balance, very tasty.

Bottle. Well bottled and pleasant but a bit too bitter for my taste. If it wasn’t I would probably have scored it higher. I am still struggling with the concept of a black IPA-the key to this confusion is the P for pale.
Still quite a nice beer though.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Svesse (5207) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - MAY 10, 2013
(Cask at Old Fountain, Old Street, London, 27 Apr 2013) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, fruity, hoppy nose with coffee, chocolate, caramel, pine needles and hints of tropical fruit. Malty, fruity taste with notes of caramel, coffee, chocolate, pine needles, grapefruit, resin, raisins and a generous resinous/piney bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Surprisingly well balanced and drinkable. Very nice.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 lusikka (4047) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAY 1, 2013
330 ml bottle.
Pours a black colour with a creamy white head. Aroma of roasted malts, floral hops, blackcurrant and passion fruit. Flavour of strong roasted malts, burnt wood, floral hops, rubber, sweet juiciness and pungent salty licorice. Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel and rather high carbonation. Finish is very bitter and roasty with surprisingly strong saltiness. Saltiness disturbs, but otherwise a strong black IPA.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 tiong (2244) - Espoo, FINLAND - APR 27, 2013
330ml bottle from Ales by Mail
Pours dark brown, almost black with a large foamy head. Aroma of roasty malts, exotic fruits and hints of citrus. Taste is smooth, and quite a nice mix of roastiness and exotic fruitness with a touch of salty licorice and grassy hops. Finish is dry and fruity with lots of roastiness and salty licorice. Quite nice, although a tad too salty and roasty black IPA.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Idiosynkrasie (1853) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - APR 26, 2013
330ml bottle. Cloudy dark brown colour with average to huge, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Fruity and bitter hop aroma has notes of grapefruit, passion fruit, citrus, cautious hints of dark chocolate. Taste is bitter hoppy, citrusy, slightly fruity; cautious dry, roasty dark malty undertones; in the disappointing finish unpleasantly flat bitter.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 olio (4094) - Tampere, FINLAND - APR 19, 2013
33 cl bottle.
Pours murky brown color with a large, thick off-white head. Aroma has the intense hops and roast malts familiar to most black ipas, pine needles, nice floral notes, some resin and caramel are there too. Lots of citrus fruits, mostly mandarin, on the flavor, roasted dry malts and resiny hops follow. Quite bitter but still somewhat dry palate with a nice refreshing effect. Very nice brew altogether.

Keg/Cask at William IV Bunny Basher; tried both versions side by side both quality BIPA’s, piney resinous hop balanced with a slight roast malt, the keg held on to head longer, the Keg version was marginally better for me the colder dispense made the hop taste crisper.
