Cask (handpump) at the King William IV on 24 July 2011. Near black. A little butter in the aroma but not too intrusive. Dry and roasty on the palate. Quite astringent bitterness on the finish. Shame about the butter.

Cask at William IV during Brodies Birthday Bash 2011. Pours a clear, red-brown with a faint, off-white head. Mild chocolate nose, faint sour malts. Flavor is pretty sour and unpleasant, with very low sweetness and roast. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Has a dry, burnt malt finish with lingering sour notes. Not good. And what was especially troubling was that one of the bartenders said it was supposed to taste sour. Ah, I don’t think so. A second bartender agreed that perhaps this beer was starting to turn.

On tap at Brodies BrewPub. Opaque black beer, good suddy tan head. Smooth low carbonation palate, semi dry. Very tangy dark malt. Very mild roast. Trace of red fruits underneath. Finishes semi dry with a mildly bitter aftertaste. Good but a bit too tangy.

Cask@King William IV, London. Very deep amber colour, close to black, with a small white head. Aroma is ashes, chocolate, mild toffee, some woast, wood and mild resiny notes. Flavour is qyute much the same. The aftertaste has a very pleasant ashy and burnt wet wooden touch to it.
