A powerful black ale and the most London of all beers. This one is made the way Porters were made 100 years ago.

Cask conditioned at Fleetwood Beer Fest ’12. Very dark brown, ruby with cream head. Lots of roasty, malt notes, chocolate, coffee flavours mixed with a light fruitiness. There is a surprisingly dry hop note that adds plenty of depth. A cracker on the day this one.

Cask at The Bow Bar. Black with thick off-white head. Lots of deep roasted character and a little hops leading to a nice bitter linger. Good gear.

On cask at The Bow Bar. Pours a dark brown colour with a lovely pine and coffee aroma. Beautiful resinous pine hop flavour also with coffee, roasty malt, alcohol and chocolate. Moderate carbonation. Delicious!

Cask at the brewpub. Near black. Tart black cherry and coffee aroma. Mid sweet with full body and rounded mouthfeel. Lactic milk chocolate roastiness,. A bit oaky with notes of tobacco. Salty, mid bitter finish. Complex and tasty!

(Gravity cask at Bree Louise, Euston, London, 24 Nov 2011) Dark brown colour, almost black, with brief bubbly head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of dried fruit, coffee and chocolate. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, prunes, raisins and a slightly vinous finish with a decent cocoa bitterness. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Nice one.

Cask @ William IV. Black body with a small beige head. Aroma of dark, roasted malt and coffee. Flavor is moderate roasted malt, fruity, some liquorices, hint of coffe and decent bitter, but there is also some annoying sourness that’s not any good. Medium to medium plus body. Roasted aftertaste with some bitterness, but again this annoying sourness. Drinkable but not balanced and probably not meant to be like this. Still a lot of potensial, must go back an re-rate.

RBESG August 2011, King William IV. Black with a small off-white head. The aroma has lots of dark fruits, plums and prunes, some toffee, vanilla and mild spices. Sweet malty flavour with licorice and dark fruits, and a slightly burnt finish

[cask at the King William IV, Leyton] Slightly hazy deep brownish black beer, which was almost totally flat. Musty, yeasty aroma, with some toasty malt there. The overall flavour was not great, sour and yeasty as if it’s not right. Thin, strange aftertaste. Drainpour. One for a re-rate [20092011]
