Pours almost black but with a slight red tinge, brown head. Pepper and chocolate on the nose. Suburb, a little sweeter than I like but the depth of finish takes it to higher places, hints of chilli on a very long finish. (rating backlog, tasted around 12/07/13)

The Hanging Bat . Boozy thick and loosely dense with some interesting things happening throughout the palate. Ends up being a bit of a boozy kick at the end. While pleasant enough it doesn’t really caress the mouth or offer as much distinct development as I would expect. A good base beer to sacrifice for a range of barrel conditioning ideas.

Keg@bat
dark amber tinged brown head on black beer. Rich roast barley/coffee nose. Fairly light fruity coffee with lemonpeel notes, boozy but not too heavy, thick medium carb, sweet, bedtime beer.

3 yo Bottle @ Stouts Tasting Pt III: Brokeback Edition. Thanks to Leighton for breaking this out from the cellar. The pour’s deep ruddy brown with a small head. Light red highlights. The nose is tangy raisin cake. Roast malts. Mild toffee and pain au chocolate. The taste is more pain au chocolate. Hints of cherry and caramel-coated nut. Nice tangy accents. Smooth and very drinkable. Nimble for the ABV. Overall, pretty tasty indeed.

Bottle (3 years old?) at Stout 3 & Freestyle Tasting, thanks to Leighton for this Brodies Whale. It pours near black with a medium tan head. The nose is roasted malt, light tanginess, cocoa powder, caramel, toffee, smooth coconut, vanilla and wood. The taste is mellow, roasted malt, earth, toast, charcoal, cocoa, ashy bitterness and some alcohol warmth, with a dry, roasty finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Tasty and well-balanced. Nice!

Bottle shared at the Stouts Pt. III & Others Tasting - London. Picked up at the first London Brewers Showcase in September 2010. Best before date of 12/2010, so I suppose this beer is vintage 2009. Pours clear, black-brown-red with a modest, creamy beige head. Leathery dark fruits in the nose, some dry cocoa, some burnt leaves and burnt wood. Medium to big sweet flavor, some dark berries, dark lightly bitter chocolate, burnt sugars. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warm finish with notes of burnt marshmallows, burnt wood, dried dark fruits and berries, some leather. Lots of kick in here still. Very few signs of oxidation. The beer is holding up quite well.

Sampled at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Pours a dark brown beer with no head. The aroma is malt, roasted and coffee. The flavor follows the nose with additional chocolate. The palate is sweetness. Overall a good beer.

Cask - William IV, Leyton, London. Poured pitch black with a negligible loose & fading beige to light tan head. Big coffee profile. Dark fruits, chocolate & coffee nose. Chocolate, dark fruits, coffee & liquorice on the tongue. Thick, silky & rich on the palate, soft mouthfeel with a lingering, dryish bittersweet finish. The coffee hangs on in the aftertaste for some time too. Plenty of flavour, character & heft but remains deceptive in terms of drinkability. Almost no heat or traces of the ABV. Such a nice beer. It’s big but not overpoweringly so.
