Bottle. Cotteridge. Clear, dark cola brown. Halo of tan. Big roast malts. Leather and tar. Dark chocolate. Taste is roast bitter, with a sickly sweetness. Some burnt, savoury bitterness. Too much carbonation thins the mouthfeel. Finishes sickly sweet, and jarring bitter.

Oily dark brown, no head. Nose is rich oaty, soft pepper and soy roast. Initial taste is rusty, woody and rich sweetness. Soft carbonation and thick gritty mouthfeel. Finishes strongly, keen roast and sheen of sweetness on the linger.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines. Really delicious stuff. Jet, coupled with an often brown head. Soft, oily body. Strong booze and mocha.

Shortlived beige head over jet-black beer, lively carbonated. Quite aromatic nose with green leaves; holly, aucuba; alcohol, spirit, liqueur. Dry, faintly sourish stout features, with lots of roasted/burnt grains and malts. Hint at coffeecream; liquorice in the finish. Full bodied, viscous, rich. Rather burning MF, good carbonation, alcoholheat. Somehow it misses a little extra compared to its USA (or Italian,...) brethren. Maybe in this aspect, the B.A. versions might come out superior.

On se plonge le nez dans le contenant, et oh lalalalala!!! les malt grillés, le café , les fruits noirs, vanille, chocolat, poivré, épicé. Excellent. indéniable plaisir olfactif. On plonge.

Pours almost black but with a slight red tinge, brown head. Pepper and chocolate on the nose. Suburb, a little sweeter than I like but the depth of finish takes it to higher places, hints of chilli on a very long finish. (rating backlog, tasted around 12/07/13)

The Hanging Bat . Boozy thick and loosely dense with some interesting things happening throughout the palate. Ends up being a bit of a boozy kick at the end. While pleasant enough it doesn’t really caress the mouth or offer as much distinct development as I would expect. A good base beer to sacrifice for a range of barrel conditioning ideas.
