Cask conditioned at Fleetwood Beer Fest ’12. Very dark brown, ruby with cream head. Lots of roasty, malt notes, chocolate, coffee flavours mixed with a light fruitiness. There is a surprisingly dry hop note that adds plenty of depth. A cracker on the day this one.

On stillage at the Charles Dickens. Pours absolute black without much head...hey it’s on stillage i forgive it for that! Intense smoke roasty nose that’s mimicked in the flavours, the best thing about this is the awesome ’oily’ palate love it!

Cask gravity at Pig’s Ear BF 09. This I thought was excellent. Black, lovely roasted choc. REally good, doesn’t taste of the ABV. Really good malts, made me melt. Excellent.

Cask at the brewpub. Near black. Tart black cherry and coffee aroma. Mid sweet with full body and rounded mouthfeel. Lactic milk chocolate roastiness,. A bit oaky with notes of tobacco. Salty, mid bitter finish. Complex and tasty!

Cask (handpump) at the William IV, Leyton, November 2009. Black in colour. Lots of chocolate. Some coffee too. Firm, good hops. Some sweetness but not too much. Hints of smokiness in the malt profile together with roast notes and dried fruit. Rich and tasty but very well balanced and drinkable. Excellent stuff. And only £1.99 a pint too.

Cask conditioned handpump Southampton Arms London. A black beer with a whitish bubbly head and lacing. Lots of coffee in this. Actually less mellow than the 10% version of this and definitely (and obviously) not as rich. This has fruits as well as the dominant coffee in the nose. Big length. Really heavy on the coffee. Flavoursome and enjoyable but its big brother is a more delicious beast.

Bottle 500ml. Clear dark black brown color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, strong coffee, meat. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily - syrupy, carbonation is soft. [20100410]

Cask (William IV, Leyton, Brodies Christmas Cracker 2009)
Only possible because Reakt pulled a few strings, and the head brewer magicked 2 whole pints of this for us! Many many many many thanks, Reakt!!!
Rich soft coffee aroma. Superbly smooth roasty palate, and a touch of coffee. So full in the roast, but no astringency from burntness at all - great. Hops are low in the mix, but I don’t care - this is a fresh porter, it doesn’t need excessive hopping. Utterly delicious and it covers 7.8% completely.

Cask at Pig’s Ear 09.
Burned toast, camp fire.
Manages to both fruity and dry at the same time. Lovely beer, my favourite British beer of the festival.
